About the Role
The Accounting Support Specialist I role at California FAIR Plan Association is a critical position that requires a high level of attention to detail and strong analytical skills. As a key member of the accounting team, the successful candidate will be responsible for investigating and resolving billing inquiries, processing premium receipts, and maintaining accurate financial records. The Accounting Support Specialist I will work closely with other members of the team to ensure that all financial transactions are processed accurately and efficiently. This will involve communicating with internal and external customers, including policyholders, agents, and other stakeholders.
In terms of reporting structure, the Accounting Support Specialist I will report directly to the Accounting Manager, who will provide guidance and support to ensure that the role is performed effectively. The Accounting Manager will also be responsible for providing feedback and coaching to help the successful candidate develop their skills and advance in their career.
What You Will Do
- Investigate and resolve billing inquiries from internal and external customers, including policyholders, agents, and other stakeholders
- Process premium receipts and maintain accurate financial records, including daily bank deposit reconciliation
- Research, review, and process unidentified, suspense, and exception premium receipts
- Prepare correction entries for keying errors due to payment misapplication and bank errors
- Assist in completing moderately complex calculations and billing account analysis
- Create and track pending items, including unidentified, suspense, and exception items
- Maintain proper documentation and filing of supporting documents, including invoices, receipts, and other financial records
- Perform OFAC clearance and premium collections follow-up and resolution
- Perform backup duties as required, including providing support to other members of the accounting team
- Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the company's accounting policies and procedures
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and productivity within the accounting team
What We Are Looking For
- High school diploma required, with an accounting course preferred
- 0-1 year of accounting work experience, with experience in a similar role an asset
- Intermediate Excel skills, with the ability to learn and adapt to new software and systems
- Exceptional typing and 10-key by touch skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with a high level of productivity and efficiency
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve complex issues
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information
- Experience with Duck Creek software an asset, but not required
Nice to Have
- Accounting certification, such as CPA or bookkeeping certification
- Experience working in a remote environment, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Knowledge of accounting principles and procedures, including GAAP and financial regulations
- Experience with other accounting software, such as QuickBooks or Xero
- Bilingual or multilingual skills, with the ability to communicate with customers in multiple languages
