Job Description

About the Role

The AI Deployment Engineer role at Openai is a pivotal position that involves working closely with innovative startups to ensure the safe and effective deployment of Openai's cutting-edge technology. This role is based in Paris, France, and utilizes a hybrid work model, combining the benefits of in-office collaboration with the flexibility of remote work. The successful candidate will be part of a team that operates at the intersection of technological innovation and customer needs, driving improvements in AI systems through hands-on technical expertise and strong product judgment.

The AI Deployment Engineering team is integral to Openai's mission, serving as trusted advisors and thought partners to startups. This involves not only understanding the complex workflows and challenges of these startups but also translating those insights into actionable evaluations, product improvements, and enhancements to model behavior. The role requires a deep understanding of AI technologies and their applications, as well as the ability to navigate the intricacies of startup environments.

What You Will Do

  • Collaborate directly with strategic startup customers to identify critical workflows, uncover potential failure modes, and pinpoint high-impact opportunities for improvement.
  • Design, prototype, and iterate on prompts, agents, and workflow designs to better comprehend system behavior and unlock customer value.
  • Synthesize and deliver valuable feedback to the Product and Research teams, transforming real-world usage patterns into clear, reproducible evaluations, benchmarks, and technical artifacts that enhance model and product quality.
  • Develop repeatable tools, patterns, and evaluation approaches that elevate the quality bar across multiple use cases.
  • Operate with strong judgment in ambiguous environments, balancing immediate technical problem-solving with longer-term system improvement.
  • Foster relationships within the startup ecosystem, serving as a technical partner to both individual customers and the broader community.
  • Work closely with the engineering, research, and product teams to turn insights into concrete product improvements and model enhancements.
  • Participate in the development of best practices and standards for AI deployment, contributing to the advancement of the field.

What We Are Looking For

  • Strong software engineering and AI fundamentals, with experience in shipping production systems end-to-end being a significant advantage.
  • Background as a startup CTO, software engineer, ML engineer, Data Scientist, or equivalent, with a preference for those who have experience as a technical founder or engineer at an early-stage startup.
  • Familiarity with or interest in model training pipelines and reinforcement learning, as well as experience building AI applications, agents, or evaluation systems.
  • Ability to reason clearly about model behavior in complex workflows and comfort working directly with highly technical users.
  • Experience in moving fluidly between prototyping, debugging, evaluation design, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • High agency, strong product sense, and a bias toward building durable improvements rather than one-off fixes.
  • Fluency in French, given the role's location and the necessity to collaborate effectively with local startups and teams.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with cloud platforms and containerization technologies.
  • Knowledge of agile development methodologies and version control systems.
  • Participation in open-source projects or personal projects that demonstrate AI and software engineering skills.
  • Experience in a remote or hybrid work environment, with the ability to self-manage and collaborate effectively in a distributed team.

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive salary and equity package, reflective of the candidate's experience and the company's commitment to attracting top talent.
  • Comprehensive health insurance, including dental and vision coverage, to support the well-being of employees and their families.
  • Generous PTO policy, acknowledging the importance of work-life balance and the need for rejuvenation.
  • Remote work stipend, providing financial support for home office setup and ongoing expenses.
  • Professional development opportunities, including access to training, conferences, and workshops, to foster continuous learning and growth.
  • Access to cutting-edge technologies and the opportunity to contribute to the development of AI, being at the forefront of technological innovation.

How to Stand Out
