About the Role
The AI Deployment Engineering team at Openai plays a vital role in helping high-growth startups successfully deploy and utilize AI technology. As the AI Deployment Engineering Manager, you will lead this team in partnering with startups to overcome technical hurdles and drive production usage of Openai's technologies. Your expertise will be instrumental in guiding these businesses in leveraging AI to achieve meaningful impact.The startup ecosystem is known for its fast-paced and often ambiguous environment, requiring leaders who can navigate these challenges with ease. As the AI Deployment Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for defining the strategic vision and operating model for the team, aligning it with Openai's broader company objectives and the evolving needs of high-growth startup customers.
The role will involve close collaboration with various stakeholders, including the sales team, to determine where technical engagement can accelerate adoption and long-term account growth. You will also represent the technical voice of startup customers, synthesizing high-signal feedback and translating recurring startup needs into repeatable playbooks and customer-facing assets.
What You Will Do
- Craft and continuously refine the strategic vision and operating model for the Startups AI Deployment Engineering team
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of high-performing technical ICs supporting startup customers
- Help startups move from early experimentation to production usage by identifying technical blockers, advising on architecture, and driving practical paths to deployment
- Partner closely with Sales to determine where technical engagement can accelerate adoption, production usage, and long-term account growth
- Represent the technical voice of startup customers by synthesizing high-signal feedback
- Translate recurring startup needs into repeatable playbooks, starter packs, reference architectures, internal tooling, and customer-facing assets
- Serve as a senior technical escalation point for priority startup customers
- Balance urgent customer needs with Openai's broader product and platform priorities
- Coach AI Deployment Engineers on technical quality, customer judgment, prioritization, executive communication, and cross-functional partnership
- Partner across Sales, Product, Engineering, Research, and other GTM teams to improve how Openai supports startups
What We Are Looking For
- Proven experience founding, scaling, or operating within early-stage startups, ideally in technical leadership roles
- Strong track record of building and leading technical, customer-facing teams in high-growth, ambiguous, or startup-heavy environments
- Strong technical depth across APIs, platform products, AI/ML systems, developer workflows, and production deployment considerations
- Experience creating scalable operating models, not just managing one-off customer escalations
- Comfort working directly with founders, CTOs, and technical teams of high-growth startups
- Ability to balance team leadership, technical depth, customer prioritization, and cross-functional influence
- Experience with GTM strategies and their application in startup environments
- Strong understanding of the startup ecosystem and the challenges faced by high-growth businesses
Nice to Have
- Experience with cloud-based technologies and their integration with AI systems
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and their application in ensuring smooth deployment and operation of AI technologies
- Knowledge of data analytics and its role in informing AI-driven decision-making
