About the Role
The AI Deployment Engineering team at Openai plays a critical role in helping customers move from experimentation to production with Openai's technologies. As the AI Deployment Engineering Manager for Startups, you will lead and scale the Startups AI Deployment Engineering motion, working closely with high-growth startups to drive AI adoption and build durable technical partnerships.The Startups segment is characterized by fast-moving, high-growth companies that are often building new products, workflows, and businesses directly on top of AI. These customers require practical, creative, and technically rigorous partnerships to unlock meaningful impact from frontier AI.
What You Will Do
- Craft and refine the strategic vision and operating model for the Startups AI Deployment Engineering team
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of high-performing technical ICs supporting startup customers
- Help startups move from early experimentation to production usage by identifying technical blockers and advising on architecture
- Partner closely with Sales to determine where technical engagement can accelerate adoption and production usage
- Represent the technical voice of startup customers and synthesize high-signal feedback
- Translate recurring startup needs into repeatable playbooks and customer-facing assets
- Serve as a senior technical escalation point for priority startup customers
- Balance urgent customer needs with Openai's broader product and platform priorities
- Coach AI Deployment Engineers on technical quality, customer judgment, and cross-functional partnership
- Partner across Sales, Product, Engineering, Research, and other GTM teams to improve support for startups
What We Are Looking For
- Proven experience founding, scaling, or operating within early-stage startups, ideally in technical leadership roles
- Strong track record of building and leading technical, customer-facing teams in high-growth environments
- Technical depth across APIs, platform products, AI/ML systems, developer workflows, and production deployment considerations
- Experience creating scalable operating models and managing one-off customer escalations
- Comfort working in high-velocity customer segments with high ambiguity
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to balance team leadership, technical depth, customer prioritization, and cross-functional influence
- Experience with GTM teams and sales partnerships
