As an AI-First Android Engineer, you will be the single-threaded owner of the Android surface, operating as an "engineer-as-a-team" and directing fleets of coding agents to design, build, test, and ship Android features in Kotlin against the Android SDK.In this role, you will take total ownership of a slice of the Android app, from discovery to production, and be measured by the features you ship, the quality of your code, and the impact on customers. You will work in a new-world environment where one well-equipped engineer can deliver the output of a small team, and you will be expected to compound your own leverage every quarter by developing better prompts, evaluations, and agent harnesses.
What You Will Do
- Direct multiple AI coding agents in parallel to design, build, test, and ship Android features in Kotlin against the Android SDK
- Take total ownership of a slice of the Android app, from discovery to production, and be responsible for the quality and reliability of the code
- Develop and defend a strong point of view on what good Android code looks like inside Grove's architecture
- Design prompts, evaluations, and harnesses that make AI-assisted mobile development repeatable and measurable
- Stand up automation that closes the loop, including Fastlane lanes, CircleCI checks, AppCenter/Play Console distribution, device test farms, telemetry-driven rollback, and AI-powered review gates
- Collaborate with other engineers on architecture and trade-offs, and solicit business context from PMs, designers, and platform engineers
- Own production health autonomously, monitoring Sentry, Datadog, Cloudflare, and Firebase to assess system health, triage incidents, and re-prioritize your own backlog
- Mentor the Heady contractor team on AI-native workflows and share learnings with mobile peers
- Triage Sentry crashes, hotfix, and root-cause incidents with AI-assisted investigation and remediation
What We Are Looking For
- 5-8 years of professional Android development experience with a portfolio of shipped consumer apps at scale
- Native, demonstrable fluency with modern AI coding tooling, such as Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or Codex
- Strong, opinionated taste in Kotlin and modern Android architecture, including Clean Architecture, MVVM, multi-module Gradle, Koin for DI, Coroutines/Flow, and Moshi
- Experience working in a DataBinding/XML codebase, with the judgment to drive a phased Compose migration when and where it's necessary
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, autonomous environment and take total ownership of features from discovery to production
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with other engineers, PMs, designers, and platform engineers
- Experience with AppsFlyer and other mobile analytics tools
Nice to Have
- Experience with Jetpack Compose and the ability to introduce it into a DataBinding/XML codebase
- Knowledge of machine learning and AI principles, and the ability to apply them to mobile development
