Job Description

About the Role

The AI Solutions Engineer role at Affirm is a hands-on engineering position that involves building, deploying, and maintaining AI-powered systems to serve the People function and the broader employee base. This role requires a deep understanding of software engineering principles, technical architecture, and systems thinking. As an AI Solutions Engineer, you will work closely with partners across the People function to turn rough applications and processes into production systems, pushing back when technical constraints change what's possible.

The People Tech & Analytics team at Affirm is responsible for building and owning the data, AI, and technology infrastructure for the People function. The team operates like a product engineering group embedded in HR, owning the full stack: data ingestion, transformation, dashboards, AI tools, and production applications deployed on Snowflake. As an AI Solutions Engineer, you will be an integral part of this team, working on complex problems and developing innovative solutions.

What You Will Do

  • Build and ship AI agents, APIs, and applications on Affirm's internal platform (Snowpark Container Services / Quicksilver), owning the full lifecycle: architecture, containerization, networking, secrets, CI/CD, monitoring, and fixing what breaks.
  • Turn messy business requirements from People Operations stakeholders into production systems, integrating with Workday, Notion, and case management tools to surface real answers from governed content.
  • Navigate Affirm's existing security and data governance infrastructure to get AI systems running safely on people data, figuring out what's allowed, building within those constraints, and ensuring employee data stays where it's supposed to.
  • Design reliability infrastructure for multi-model LLM services, including structured output validation, fallback chains, circuit breakers for external APIs, and quality controls that catch hallucination before users see it.
  • Work directly with non-technical stakeholders to scope problems, make architecture decisions, and give honest assessments of what AI can and can't do, translating in both directions.
  • Contribute to the team's shared Python codebase, dbt models, and Snowflake infrastructure as part of a small, full-stack team that ships fast.
  • Own what you build, diagnosing and fixing issues when something breaks in production.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure seamless integration of AI systems with existing infrastructure and applications.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation for AI systems and infrastructure.

What We Are Looking For

  • Software engineering foundation, with experience building, deploying, and maintaining production applications.
  • Systems thinking and technical architecture skills, understanding how software systems fit together: databases, APIs, authentication, hosting, deployment pipelines.
  • Proficiency in Python, with the ability to think in systems and read code well enough to know when something is wrong.
  • Experience with version control (Git/GitHub), CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and what it takes to keep software running.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with non-technical stakeholders and translate complex technical concepts into simple language.
  • Experience with AI and machine learning technologies, including AI agents, APIs, and applications.
  • Familiarity with data governance and security principles, with the ability to navigate existing infrastructure and ensure employee data stays safe.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Snowflake and Snowpark Container Services.
  • Knowledge of containerization and orchestration technologies, such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies and version control systems.
  • Experience with cloud-based infrastructure and deployment pipelines.

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive salary and equity package.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Generous PTO and holiday policy.
  • Remote work stipend and flexible work arrangements.
  • Professional development opportunities, including training and conference sponsorships.
  • Access to cutting-edge technology and innovative projects.

How to Stand Out

  • Be prepared to demonstrate your technical expertise in Python and systems thinking, with examples of previous projects or experiences.
  • Show your ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, highlighting your collaboration and communication skills.
  • Emphasize your experience with AI and machine learning technologies, including AI agents, APIs, and applications.
  • Highlight your understanding of data governance and security principles, and your ability to navigate existing infrastructure to ensure employee data stays safe.
  • Be ready to discuss your approach to reliability infrastructure for multi-model LLM services, including structured output validation and quality controls.
  • Research Affirm's company culture and values, and be prepared to discuss how your skills and experience align with their mission and goals.
