About the Role
As an Applied AI Engineer at A1, you will play a crucial role in developing and shipping AI features that bring intelligence to everyday conversations, errands, and workflows. Your primary focus will be on turning model capabilities into real product behavior, ensuring that AI features are reliable, efficient, and meet the required standards. You will work closely with the product and engineering teams to identify and solve complex problems, making AI a seamless and integral part of users' lives.The role requires a deep understanding of machine learning, systems, and product development, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with cross-functional teams. You will be responsible for designing and iterating on prompts, tools, memory, and agent workflows, and for developing lightweight evaluation frameworks to measure real-world performance.

As an Applied AI Engineer, you will be expected to bring structure, exercise judgment, and execute independently, while maintaining a strong focus on shipping high-quality work.
What You Will Do
- Build and ship AI features end-to-end, from model development to user experience
- Design and iterate on prompts, tools, memory, and agent workflows
- Turn raw model outputs into structured, reliable, and predictable behaviors
- Debug issues across the full stack, including model, orchestration, infra, and UX
- Optimize for latency, cost, and production reliability
- Develop lightweight evaluation frameworks to measure real-world performance
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to translate ambiguous problems into working systems
- Work with modern neural network architectures, such as PyTorch and JAX
- Integrate with external tools and services, such as OpenAI-style APIs and vector databases
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to the improvement of the codebase
- Identify and address production issues, and implement fixes and improvements
What We Are Looking For
- Strong foundation in machine learning and modern neural network architectures
- Hands-on experience with training, fine-tuning, or deploying ML models
- Ability to write clean, production-quality code
- Comfort working across abstraction layers, from model to infra to product
- Strong problem-solving skills in ambiguous, fast-moving environments
- Experience with shipping high-quality AI features and iterating on model performance
- Knowledge of inference and serving technologies, such as vLLM
- Familiarity with vector databases and other data storage solutions
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work independently and bring structure to complex problems
Nice to Have
- Experience with natural language processing and conversational AI
- Knowledge of cloud computing platforms, such as AWS or GCP
- Familiarity with agile development methodologies and version control systems
