About the Role
The Associate General Counsel role at Openai is a critical position that requires a unique blend of legal expertise and technological savvy. As a member of the Legal team, you will be responsible for leading global hardware IP portfolio initiatives, including patent, trademark, and other intellectual property matters. This is a highly cross-functional role that will involve working closely with various teams across Openai, including Legal, Communications, Global Affairs, Product, Research, and Executive teams.The role is based in San Francisco, CA, and offers a hybrid work model with 3 days in the office per week. Openai also provides relocation assistance to new employees. As a key member of the Legal team, you will be expected to own global hardware IP initiatives, create scalable processes, and advise on strategic deals.
What You Will Do
- Own global hardware IP initiatives, including setting and executing on the strategic direction and management of Openai's hardware IP portfolio
- Create scalable processes internally and externally with outside counsel to build, maintain, and protect Openai's hardware IP portfolio
- Develop and maintain internal hardware IP policies and programs
- Engage externally on hardware IP policy issues
- Advise on strategic hardware IP deals
- Advise on hardware IP issues, ranging from patent, trademark, trade secret to open source
- Develop and build internal AI expertise, processes, and tools to facilitate legal team work
- Experience advising on complex technology transactions and inbound technology licensing
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and mitigate potential IP risks
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and developments in IP law and technology
What We Are Looking For
- At least 10+ years of combined hardware IP experience at innovative technology companies and law firms
- A JD and license or qualification to practice in CA
- Strong sense of ownership, inquisitive nature, and enthusiasm for technology
- Ability to demonstrate sound judgment in ambiguous situations
- Experience advising on complex technology transactions and inbound technology licensing
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks
- Experience with intellectual property management software and tools
Nice to Have
- Experience working in a hybrid remote work environment
- Familiarity with AI and machine learning technologies
- Certification in IP law or a related field
- Experience working with global teams and managing international IP portfolios
