Job Description

About the Role

The Associate General Counsel position at Openai is a pivotal role that navigates the complex and evolving legislative and regulatory landscape of AI in India. This involves delving into the intricacies of laws applicable to AI, analyzing their impact on Openai and the broader AI community, and developing policy positions on frontier legislation. The role is based in Delhi or Mumbai and reports to the Head of Legal, APAC.

As part of Openai's Legal team, the Associate General Counsel will collaborate with various stakeholders, including the Global Affairs team, to strategize on regulatory engagement and compliance matters. The role requires a legal professional with a flair for policy, an understanding of the tech industry, and the ability to engage with regulators and policymakers effectively.

What You Will Do

  • Analyze laws and regulations in India concerning AI to understand their implications on Openai and the broader AI community.
  • Develop policy positions on emerging legislation and international standards.
  • Partner with the Global Affairs team on regulatory strategy and engagement.
  • Manage Indian regulatory compliance matters.
  • Collaborate with Product Legal teams to support the availability, growth, and responsible deployment of Openai’s products and services in India.
  • Contribute to ongoing improvements in AI governance as regulations come into force.
  • Monitor and keep the broader legal team updated on emerging legislative and regulatory developments related to AI in the APAC region.
  • Engage with regulators, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to advocate for Openai’s interests.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key external advisors and experts.

What We Are Looking For

  • 12+ years of legal and/or policy experience.
  • Strong leadership and ability to influence.
  • A combination of in-house company, government/institution, or law firm experience.
  • Strong background in technology laws.
  • Experience and familiarity with AI or a demonstrated interest in AI laws and regulations.
  • Ability to create clear and concise written and verbal communication, distilling complex concepts into simple, explainable, and persuasive ideas.
  • Experience analyzing complex legislation.
  • Experience engaging with regulators and/or policymakers.
  • A law degree from a recognized institution.
  • Admission to the bar in India.
