About the Role
The Backend Software Engineer position at Openai is a dynamic and challenging role that requires a unique blend of technical expertise and product mindset. As a member of the GTM Innovation team, you will be responsible for developing high-impact applications and tools that accelerate Openai's go-to-market efforts. This team is an internal powerhouse that applies advanced capabilities to real-world interactions, reshaping conversations with customers and learning from every exchange.The GTM Innovation team is an incubator that amplifies the impact of Sales, Technical Success, Enablement, and Revenue Operations by deploying Openai's technology at scale. As a backend software engineer, you will partner closely with go-to-market teams to understand their workflows, identify leverage points, and ship novel solutions using Openai's API platform. Your work will directly shape how customers experience Openai's technology in the field, making this a highly visible and impactful role.
What You Will Do
- Build high-impact applications and tools that accelerate Openai's go-to-market efforts
- Work across the full product lifecycle for GTM: prototype, iterate, ship, and maintain
- Embed with Sales, Technical Success, and Revenue Operations to identify user needs and build for them
- Apply Openai's models in novel ways to solve real-world customer and internal workflow problems
- Translate learnings into feedback for Applied and Research teams to inform product development
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop innovative solutions
- Develop and maintain large-scale systems, ensuring scalability and reliability
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to the improvement of the codebase
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies
- Collaborate with the product team to define and prioritize project requirements
What We Are Looking For
- 4+ years of experience as a software/ML/product engineer working on user-facing systems
- Fluency in Python or JavaScript and comfort building full-stack applications
- Experience with building or prototyping LLM-powered workflows using the OpenAI API (or similar)
- Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures and algorithms
- Experience with cloud-based platforms and containerization (e.g., Docker)
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to take initiative, move quickly, and operate with a strong sense of ownership
- Enjoy working closely with end users and shaping 0→1 products
Nice to Have
- Former founder, or early engineer at a startup who built a product from scratch
- Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems (e.g., Git)
- Familiarity with machine learning frameworks and tools (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch)
- Experience with cybersecurity and data protection best practices
