About the Role

The Backend/Data/Payments Engineer role at NirYu is a unique opportunity to build the financial and data infrastructure that powers the company's innovative healthcare solutions. As a key member of the engineering team, you will be responsible for designing and building core backend systems, working closely with product and design teams to ship high-quality solutions quickly. You will be working on systems at the intersection of payments, healthcare, and consumer products, making foundational decisions on architecture, data models, and security.

What You Will Do

  • Design and build core backend systems across payments, ledgers, and health eligibility
  • Own architectural decisions around data integrity, fault tolerance, and security
  • Build reliable integrations with external providers and APIs
  • Work closely with product and design teams to ship quickly without sacrificing quality
  • Use AI coding tools and build agentic workflows to automate development and produce well-tested, elegant code quickly
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to the improvement of the overall codebase
  • Collaborate with other engineers to identify and prioritize new features and system improvements
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation for the systems you build
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues that arise during development or in production

What We Are Looking For

  • Strong experience in backend systems, ideally in payments, fintech, or healthcare
  • Experience with providers like Stripe, Plaid, or similar ecosystems
  • Strong understanding of relational and transactional data systems (consistency, atomicity, concurrency, locking)
  • Comfort making high-impact architectural decisions with minimal oversight
  • A builder mindset with a bias toward shipping and iteration
  • Deep familiarity with AI coding tools and interest in building agentic workflows that generate well-tested, maintainable code with faster iteration cycles
  • Strong communication skills: clear writing, responsiveness, and willingness to engage directly with external partners

Nice to Have

  • Experience with TypeScript, Next.js, Expo, or React Native
  • Familiarity with Postgres, Railway, Datadog, or PostHog
  • Knowledge of functional programming patterns and immutability principles
  • Experience with automated testing and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines
