Job Description

About the Role

The Capacity Planning & Tooling Program Manager role at Openai is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of technology and operations. As a key member of the infrastructure team, you will be responsible for designing and delivering tools that improve visibility, automate planning workflows, and support decision-making at scale. This role requires a deep understanding of capacity planning, infrastructure planning, and supply chain operations, as well as the ability to translate business needs into technical requirements.

The day-to-day work will involve partnering with cross-functional teams, including capacity planning, infrastructure, engineering, finance, and operations, to identify areas for improvement and develop solutions. You will need to be comfortable working with ambiguous requirements and turning them into structured systems, workflows, or tooling roadmaps. The role will also involve driving alignment on planning definitions, operating metrics, data sources, and reporting cadences, as well as supporting leadership decision-making by enabling clearer visibility into capacity risks, tradeoffs, and execution status.

As Openai continues to grow, this role will play a critical part in building repeatable processes that allow capacity planning to scale with the company's infrastructure growth. If you have experience building internal tools, planning systems, automation workflows, or data-heavy operational processes, and are looking for a challenging and rewarding role, this could be the perfect fit.

What You Will Do

  • Build and improve tooling that supports infrastructure capacity planning, forecasting, allocation, and scenario planning
  • Partner with capacity planning teams to understand current workflows, pain points, data dependencies, and opportunities for automation
  • Translate business and operational planning needs into clear technical requirements for internal tools and systems
  • Develop or coordinate development of dashboards, planning models, workflow automations, and system integrations
  • Create reliable data flows across capacity, demand, supply, hardware availability, deployment timelines, and infrastructure readiness
  • Help move planning from spreadsheet/manual workflows toward scalable systems-based processes
  • Work cross-functionally with engineering, finance, supply chain, data center, and operations teams to ensure planning tools reflect real execution constraints
  • Identify gaps in current planning logic, data quality, tooling coverage, and process ownership
  • Drive alignment on planning definitions, operating metrics, data sources, and reporting cadences
  • Support leadership decision-making by enabling clearer visibility into capacity risks, tradeoffs, and execution status
  • Build repeatable processes that allow capacity planning to scale with Openai's infrastructure growth

What We Are Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience in technical program management, product operations, infrastructure planning, systems engineering, data tooling, or related roles
  • Experience building or managing tooling for planning, forecasting, allocation, supply chain, infrastructure, or operations workflows
  • Strong ability to translate operational processes into technical requirements and system designs
  • Experience working with engineering teams to deliver internal tools, dashboards, data pipelines, or automation systems
  • Comfort working with large, complex datasets and cross-functional planning inputs
  • Strong project management and stakeholder management skills in fast-moving environments
  • Experience in cloud infrastructure, hardware infrastructure, data centers, supply chain operations, or related fields
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to reason through complex dependencies, constraints, and tradeoffs
  • Fluency with data models, dashboards, reporting systems, APIs, or internal productivity tooling

Nice to Have

  • Experience with automation tools and workflows
  • Knowledge of data center operations and infrastructure planning
  • Familiarity with supply chain management and logistics
  • Certification in project management or a related field

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive salary and benefits package
  • Opportunity to work with a leading tech company and contribute to its growth and success
  • Collaborative and dynamic work environment
  • Professional development and growth opportunities
  • Flexible remote work arrangements
  • Access to cutting-edge technology and tools
  • Comprehensive health and wellness benefits
  • Generous paid time off and vacation days
  • Recognition and reward programs for outstanding performance

How to Stand Out

  • Tip: Highlight your experience with tooling and automation in your resume and cover letter, as this is a key requirement for the role.
  • When preparing for the interview, make sure you can provide specific examples of times when you had to translate business needs into technical requirements and drive cross-functional alignment.
  • Be prepared to discuss your experience with data analysis and visualization, as well as your ability to communicate complex ideas to non-technical stakeholders.
  • If you have experience working in a fast-paced tech environment, be sure to highlight this in your application, as it will be seen as a major plus.
  • When negotiating salary, be sure to research the market rate for similar roles and be prepared to make a strong case for your worth.
  • Finally, be sure to ask about the company culture and values during the interview process, as this will give you a sense of whether you will be a good fit for the team.
