About the Role

The Civil Litigator position at Mercor is a unique opportunity for legal professionals to leverage their expertise in a fully remote setting. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for designing legally realistic scenarios from your litigation practice, including motions, discovery, depositions, briefs, and case strategy. This role is critical in supporting the development of AI-generated responses that mimic real-world legal scenarios, ensuring the highest quality output.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of complex litigation cases, applying your legal expertise to craft high-quality, attorney-level responses. Your work will be instrumental in helping the research team improve model behavior, leading to more accurate and reliable AI-generated legal documents.

What You Will Do

  • Design and develop legally realistic scenarios from your litigation practice, covering all aspects of civil litigation.
  • Write high-quality, attorney-level responses that can serve as reference points for AI-generated legal documents.
  • Grade AI-generated responses against structured rubrics, providing detailed feedback to the research team.
  • Participate in onboarding office hours and specialty calibration sessions to ensure the highest level of expertise is applied.
  • Collaborate with the research team to improve model behavior and output quality.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the legal landscape, staying updated on recent developments and trends.
  • Apply your knowledge of legal principles and practices to real-world scenarios, ensuring the accuracy and validity of AI-generated responses.
  • Contribute to the development of case management software and e-discovery tools, leveraging your expertise to inform and improve these critical systems.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain and enhance your legal skills, ensuring you remain current with industry best practices.

What We Are Looking For

  • 1-4 years of professional experience in civil litigation, gained through working at a law firm, government agency, or legal department.
  • Hold a J.D. (U.S./Canada) or LL.B./LL.M. (U.K.) from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in the U.S., Canada, or U.K. (active or inactive).
  • Excellent written communication skills, with high attention to detail and the ability to craft compelling, legally sound documents.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to apply legal principles to complex scenarios.
  • Experience with e-discovery tools and case management software, preferably Relativity or similar platforms.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote setting, with strong self-motivation and discipline.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

Nice to Have

  • Appellate or trial experience, demonstrating a broader understanding of legal practices and procedures.
  • Familiarity with document coding, privilege review, and other aspects of e-discovery.
