Job Description

About the Role

The Clinical Coding Trainer role is a vital part of the Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust's Clinical Coding Department. As a skilled and motivated trainer, you will be responsible for delivering comprehensive training programs for clinical coding trainees and apprentices. Your expertise will play a key role in promoting high-quality clinical coding across the Trust, supporting colleagues to deepen their understanding of coding standards and processes.

The Clinical Coding Department is a supportive and inclusive team, working closely with clinicians, medical secretaries, and other allied professionals to ensure accurate and timely coding of patient information. As a trainer, you will be working with a team of dedicated professionals who are committed to delivering high-quality work within demanding time frames.

What You Will Do

  • Develop, plan, and deliver training courses, workshops, and ad-hoc sessions for clinical coders and related staff
  • Conduct induction for new staff and advise the Coding Manager on ongoing training and development needs
  • Act as a mentor for novice coders, assessing learning needs and shaping trainee pathways
  • Implement and deliver regular training sessions for clinical coders, ensuring adherence to national coding standards
  • Develop and update training materials, including case study training content
  • Provide coaching and conduct feedback sessions to resolve coding inaccuracies in a professional manner
  • Act as a point of contact for the Clinical Coding Department, contributing to policy and procedural development
  • Work closely with the Clinical Coding Management team to support the ongoing development of the coding workforce
  • Ensure that all training programs are aligned with the Trust's goals and objectives
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless integration of clinical coding into patient care

What We Are Looking For

  • NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Trainer certification
  • Substantial NHS experience, preferably in a clinical coding or training role
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire others
  • Strong understanding of clinical coding standards and processes, including national coding guidelines
  • Experience with Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a flexible and adaptable approach
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development, staying up-to-date with industry trends and best practices

Nice to Have

  • Experience with training program development and delivery
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and instructional design
  • Familiarity with electronic patient records and other healthcare software systems
  • Certification in a related field, such as health information management or medical records
