About the Role

Beacon Health System is seeking a skilled Coder I to join their team, focusing on reviewing, analyzing, and coding medical records to abstract relevant data into their online computer system. This role is crucial in ensuring accurate and timely data entry, maintaining productivity and accuracy levels, and contributing to the overall quality of patient care. As a remote position, the ideal candidate must reside in one of the approved states and have excellent digital skills to work effectively in a virtual environment.

Reporting to the Manager, Coding & Records, the Coder I will have the opportunity to work closely with various departments, including Patient Accounts, to resolve any coding or abstracting issues. This collaborative environment, coupled with the autonomy of remote work, makes for an engaging and challenging role that requires strong communication and problem-solving skills.

What You Will Do

  • Review and analyze discharged patient medical records to ensure all applicable patient data is available for coding and abstracting.
  • Check diagnoses and procedures to ensure accurate coding and sequencing, following established coding principles and guidelines.
  • Obtain accurate and complete patient data through the review of medical records, discharge summaries, and other relevant documents.
  • Code all procedures on inpatient records and outpatient surgical records according to ICD-9-CM Codes, CPT-4, or Physician E&M Level Code.
  • Refer questionable diagnoses and sequencing issues to the physician for clarification.
  • Communicate with the Patient Accounts staff and coordinate with the department Manager on any questionable abstract or coding problems.
  • Assign ICD-9-CM Codes and complete a coding summary.
  • Review and evaluate error messages and incompatible DRGs for a second level review.
  • Complete medical records for abstracting and resolve medical necessity-related issues.

What We Are Looking For

  • 2+ years of experience in medical coding, preferably in a hospital setting.
  • Strong understanding of ICD-9-CM and CPT coding systems.
  • Knowledge of AHIMA and AHA coding guidelines.
  • Experience with DRG and APC assignment.
  • Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a remote environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice to Have

  • Certification in medical coding (e.g., CPC, CIC).
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHRs).
  • Knowledge of CMS guidelines and regulations.
