About the Role
The Communications & External Affairs Manager at Education Reform Now Advocacy will play a pivotal role in shaping the organization's public image, managing its external affairs, and driving its communications strategy forward. This is a unique opportunity for a communications professional who is passionate about education reform and has a proven track record of success in managing press, media, and digital campaigns. The role reports to the National Director of External Affairs and involves close collaboration with other teams to advance the organization's mission.The day-to-day responsibilities of this position will include developing and implementing comprehensive communications plans, crafting compelling narratives that capture the organization's vision and mission, and fostering strong relationships with reporters, editors, and outside validators. The ideal candidate will be a skilled communicator with the ability to move fluidly between different types of communications, from pitching stories to drafting op-eds, and from managing social media campaigns to briefing state partners.
Education Reform Now Advocacy is part of a broader network of organizations committed to education reform, including Democrats for Education Reform (DFER) and Education Reform Now (ERN). This role offers the chance to be part of a dynamic and dedicated team that is working tirelessly to create a more equitable and effective education system for all students.
What You Will Do
- Develop and execute multi-faceted communications strategies to extend the organization's reach and influence.
- Manage and maintain strong relationships with media contacts, ensuring consistent and favorable coverage of the organization's work.
- Draft and edit a wide range of communications materials, including press releases, op-eds, and social media content.
- Collaborate with the digital team to create and implement engaging social media campaigns that drive engagement and support for the organization's mission.
- Provide communications support for events, campaigns, and other initiatives as needed.
- Conduct research and analysis to stay abreast of the latest trends and developments in education reform and communications.
- Build and maintain a network of outside validators and partners who can help amplify the organization's message.
- Work closely with the National Director of External Affairs to shape messaging and respond to a fast-moving political landscape.
- Develop and manage budgets for communications projects and initiatives.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of communications efforts and provide recommendations for improvement.
What We Are Looking For
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in communications, preferably in a non-profit, political, or government setting.
- Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives for different audiences.
- Experience in managing press and media relations, with a proven track record of securing media coverage.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience in digital communications, including social media management and content creation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically and creatively.
