Job Description

ABOUT THE TEAM The Communications team supports OpenAI’s mission by helping the organization communicate clearly, responsibly, and effectively with external audiences. We work closely with partners across the company to navigate complex topics, manage evolving narratives, and ensure OpenAI’s communications reflect our values and long-term goals. ABOUT THE ROLE We’re looking for an experienced Communications Manager to help shape and execute OpenAI’s communications in India, with a primary focus on consumer and product centric narratives - how people, creators, students, and communities experience and benefit from OpenAI’s tools. Working as part of a small team, this role will also support corporate communications and issues management as and when needed. This is a hands-on role for someone who can turn fast-moving product updates into clear stories, and build excitement without hype. You’ll partner closely with teams across OpenAI and with external stakeholders (media, influencers, ecosystem partners) to ensure our communications are fast, accurate, locally resonant, and trusted. You will also help keep internal teams aligned and moving during moments when priorities shift quickly. This role is based in Mumbai. WHAT YOU’LL DO Lead consumer and product narrative development - Build and evolve an India-specific narrative that makes OpenAI’s tools feel relevant, useful, and human to consumers in general, and our product users in specific.

  • Translate product and research updates into clear, culturally aware stories that resonate with Indian audiences across languages, contexts, and levels of digital maturity.
  • Build a steady drumbeat of “what’s new + why it matters”, while reiterating the value of existing products / features, across earned media and influencer channels.
  • Support external activations that accelerate adoption and positive word-of-mouth. Run day-to-day external communications - Drive media engagement (proactive + reactive; global + local), with agency support.
  • Support communications for associated launches, partnerships, and programs, ensuring narrative coherence across earned, owned, and partner channels.
  • Create comms assets: briefing docs, FAQs, talking points, and internal readouts.
  • Engage with the influencer community organically to educate the wider consumers on how to make the most of OpenAI’s tools. Cross-functional stakeholder navigation - Serve as a strong internal operator: manage cross-functional stakeholders, drive alignment, collaborate with global comms team, and keep workstreams moving.
  • Represent the India Comms function in internal forums when needed, ensuring leadership stays informed and decisions are supported with context.
  • Maintain process hygiene: trackers, approvals, documentation, and post-mortems that improve comms quality over time.
  • Support comms team in monitoring external narratives shaping up in the media, creator / influencer ecosystem, and synthesize what matters for internal stakeholders. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR - 8+ years of communications experience (in-house and/or agency), with meaningful exposure to consumer narratives in India.
  • Strong writing and editing: you can turn complexity into simple, credible, audience appropriate language without losing nuance.
  • Comfort operating in fast-moving environments with shifting priorities and imperfect information, while maintaining precision.
  • Experience supporting exec communications (briefings, prep, messaging discipline), and running comms “on point” during key product and consumer moments.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple internal stakeholders, drive alignment, collaborate across time zones, and operate with discretion.
  • Strong understanding of India’s media landscape (mainstream + business + tech + influencer/ influencer ecosystem). NICE-TO-HAVES - Experience communicating tech products (consumer internet, platforms, devices, or AI) and working with technical teams.
  • Demonstrated experience with corporate communications and issues/ crisis management, especially those associated with consumer products / services.
  • Familiarity with OpenAI’s tools as a consumer, beyond the basic use of ChatGPT. YOU MIGHT THRIVE IN THIS ROLE IF YOU - Love shaping stories that people actually repeat - clear, grounded, and locally relevant.
  • Are calm under pressure and can make good decisions quickly, without needing perfect inputs.
  • Know how to balance ambition + responsibility in communications = especially for powerful technologies.
  • Can be both strategic and operational: you’ll write, edit, brief, execute, and also zoom out to see the narrative arc.
  • Build trust easily across functions and can represent the comms function confidently when needed.
