About the Role

The Compensation Analyst, Equity and Executive Compensation will play a critical role in supporting Openai's mission to attract, retain, and motivate exceptional talent. This individual contributor role will sit at the intersection of compensation, analytics, and finance, providing thoughtful pay decisions through rigorous modeling, benchmarking, reporting, and decision support. The successful candidate will be part of a team that builds thoughtful, scalable programs across cash and equity compensation, grounded in strong governance and disciplined stewardship.

The role will involve close collaboration with Finance, Legal, and People leaders to develop competitive compensation programs and equity frameworks that align with Openai's long-term success. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of compensation fundamentals, analytical depth, and sound judgment, with the ability to navigate ambiguous problems and build repeatable tools and processes.

As a key member of the People team, the Compensation Analyst will report to the Head of Equity Programs and will be responsible for driving key cross-functional analytical projects from scoping through delivery. This will involve independently evaluating tradeoffs and aligning stakeholders on recommendations, as well as partnering with Finance on budgeting, forecasting, and analysis of financial tradeoffs across compensation programs.

What You Will Do

  • Support pay design for new-hire, refresh, promotion, recognition, retention, and executive programs through quantitative analysis and thoughtful recommendations
  • Build and maintain analytical models for compensation programs, including pay outcomes, equity grants, equity usage, dilution, stock-based compensation, budgets, and scenario planning
  • Drive key cross-functional compensation analytics projects from scoping through delivery, independently evaluating tradeoffs and aligning stakeholders on recommendations
  • Partner with Finance on budgeting, forecasting, and analysis of financial tradeoffs across compensation programs
  • Conduct market benchmarking and pay-design analyses, including market data reviews, pay positioning, and recommendation development
  • Prepare clear, decision-ready materials for senior leaders while maintaining rigorous data integrity and confidentiality
  • Collaborate with Total Rewards, HR Business Partners, Recruiting, and Equity Administration to support accurate execution and implementation of compensation programs
  • Develop and maintain dashboards and reports to track key compensation metrics and provide insights to stakeholders
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices in compensation and benefits, applying this knowledge to improve Openai's compensation programs

What We Are Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience in compensation, finance, people analytics, or a related analytical field
  • Strong financial modeling and analytical skills, including advanced Excel or Google Sheets capability and experience working with large, sensitive datasets
  • Experience evaluating compensation design, market data, budgets, forecasts, or compensation program outcomes and translating analysis into business decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to own complex, cross-functional projects, navigate ambiguity, influence stakeholders without formal authority, and develop repeatable solutions
  • Experience with equity compensation, executive compensation, or other complex compensation programs is preferred
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain quantitative findings and tradeoffs to cross-functional stakeholders
  • High integrity, ownership, and attention to detail when handling confidential compensation information
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously

Nice to Have

  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python or R
  • Certification in compensation or a related field, such as CCP or CECP
  • Experience working in a tech or startup environment
