Job Description

About the Role

HiddenLayer, a pioneer in protecting against adversarial AI attacks, is seeking a seasoned Controller to oversee accounting from end to end. This role is pivotal as the company expands, requiring a professional who can build and maintain the financial systems, controls, and close processes that a growing SaaS business relies on. Reporting directly to the CFO, the successful candidate will be responsible for driving the monthly close process, ensuring audit readiness, and managing the finance function with a focus on scalability and efficiency.

The role involves working closely with the CFO on technical accounting matters and partnering with other departments to ensure seamless financial operations. Given HiddenLayer's innovative approach to AI security and its recent significant funding, this position offers a unique blend of challenge and opportunity for a finance professional looking to make a meaningful impact.

HiddenLayer operates in a fast-paced environment, having recently closed a $50M funding round. This investment underscores the company's potential for rapid growth, making the Controller's role crucial in navigating this expansion while maintaining financial discipline and compliance.

What You Will Do

  • Own the monthly close process end-to-end, aiming for a 10-business-day cadence.
  • Stand up documentation and controls for external audit, partnering with the CFO on firm selection, and managing the audit process to a successful conclusion.
  • Manage the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, treasury, payroll accounting, and revenue recognition.
  • Partner with the CFO on technical accounting matters and leverage external support for complex issues as needed.
  • Develop and implement the finance systems roadmap, including evaluations and migrations of GL, AP, expense, and billing tooling.
  • Own and continuously improve the revenue recognition policy, reviewing non-standard contracts and collaborating with RevOps on ARR tie-out.
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations and maintain the highest standards of financial reporting and control.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive business growth and provide financial insights that inform strategic decisions.
  • Develop and manage budgets, forecasts, and financial models that support the company's strategic objectives.

What We Are Looking For

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in accounting, with a background as a Controller or Assistant Controller in a Series A/B (or later) SaaS company.
  • CPA certification.
  • Proven experience in personally owning the monthly close process in a SaaS business, with a track record of achieving a 10-business-day close.
  • Experience in leading a company through an external audit, having acted as the day-to-day internal lead.
  • Execution of at least one GL migration.
  • Experience with revenue recognition under ASC 606 in a SaaS environment, including handling non-standard deals.
  • Fluency in SaaS financial metrics and reporting, including ARR, deferred revenue, bookings-to-billings, and gross margin by revenue type.
  • Ability to work effectively in a mostly remote finance organization.

Nice to Have

  • Early-career background in a Big 4 or national firm.
  • Experience with modern SaaS-native GLs (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero).
  • Familiarity with Maxio, Chargebee, Stripe Billing, or similar platforms.
  • Prior exposure to federal customers (not GovCon).
  • Experience in cybersecurity, AI infrastructure, or adjacent fields.

Benefits and Perks

  • Fully remote work arrangement with a generous stipend for home office setup and annual upgrades.
  • Comprehensive health and wellness benefits, including vision, dental, and 401k offerings.
  • Flexible time off policy, including unlimited vacation days.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development in a rapidly expanding company.
  • Access to cutting-edge technology and tools.
  • Collaborative and dynamic work environment with a team of experienced professionals.

How to Stand Out

  • Ensure your resume and cover letter highlight specific experience with SaaS financial metrics and revenue recognition policies.
  • Prepare examples of your experience with external audits and monthly close processes.
  • Familiarize yourself with HiddenLayer's products and services to understand how your role contributes to the company's mission.
  • Be ready to discuss your experience with financial systems and tools, including any migrations you've led.
  • Research the market to negotiate your salary effectively, considering the remote aspect and industry standards.
