About the Role
The Counsel, Commercial role at Openai is a critical position that requires a unique blend of legal expertise and business acumen. As a key member of the commercial legal team, you will be responsible for providing legal support to various teams, including GTM, Partnerships, Procurement, Finance, Product, Infrastructure, and Engineering. What You Will Do
- Serve as the primary legal contact for Openai's business transactions, partnerships, and operations
- Provide practical and business-oriented legal advice to teams, including Sales, Partnerships, Finance, Procurement, and Operations
- Identify and address commercial, product, regulatory, privacy, and other legal issues arising from commercial transactions
- Develop strategies and processes for handling legal issues in creative and scalable ways that support growth
- Monitor and advise on regulatory and compliance matters affecting AI and technology
- Collaborate with colleagues across Openai's global legal team to ensure alignment across jurisdictions
- Negotiate and draft complex commercial contracts, including partnership agreements, licensing agreements, and procurement contracts
- Conduct due diligence and risk assessments for potential partnerships and transactions
- Stay up-to-date on regulatory developments and industry trends, providing insights and recommendations to the business
What We Are Looking For
- 7+ years of experience in commercial law, preferably in a technology-focused law firm or in-house role
- Strong background in drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts
- Experience working with cross-functional teams, including sales, marketing, and product development
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
- Strong knowledge of commercial law, including contract law, intellectual property law, and regulatory compliance
- Experience with AI and technology-related legal issues, including data privacy and security
