About the Role

The Counsel, Global Legal & Compliance position at Liberty Mutual Insurance is a unique opportunity for a highly motivated and qualified attorney to join the company's Strategic Counsel & Litigation Management group. This role involves working closely with national law firms on managed law firm panels, internal Global Legal department teams, and the Claims organization to provide advice and oversight on the delivery of legal services, litigation management, legal spend, and firm management. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out actions that have a significant impact on the company's rights, privileges, and responsibilities while maintaining high standards of legal and business ethics and professional responsibility.

As part of the Outside Counsel Partnerships group, the Counsel will play a crucial role in driving innovative solutions and enhancing litigated case outcomes. The company is looking for an individual with excellent communication and presentation skills, who can work effectively with various stakeholders, including claims professionals, underwriters, and external law firms.

The role is part of a dynamic team that requires collaboration, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of legal and business principles. The ideal candidate will be able to navigate complex legal issues, develop actionable strategies, and provide high-quality legal advice to support the company's objectives.

What You Will Do

  • Provide legal advice, guidance, and recommendations on all aspects of litigation management to the company
  • Develop and implement actionable strategies to enhance litigated case outcomes and cost control
  • Conduct performance oversight of national law firms and managed panels, including multi-dimensional scorecard assessments and KPI reviews
  • Analyze and manage law firms to drive innovative solutions and adherence to best practices, protocols, and SLAs
  • Negotiate competitive pricing with law firms through competitive rate analysis, holistic state analysis, and Alternative Fee Arrangement development
  • Provide legal consultation to address outside counsel issues, including conducting analysis and developing strategies to handle complex issues
  • Partner with Claims, Underwriting, Global Legal, and other stakeholders on complex and routine legal issues and unique panel projects
  • Use metrics and legal analytics to advise strategy, drive quality legal services, savings, and opportunities on legal handling, spend, and outcomes
  • Participate in multiple strategic initiatives across the SCLM, Claims, and Global Legal departments
  • Maintain current knowledge of legal issues and developments in the law

What We Are Looking For

  • Completion of law school with a J.D. or L.L.B. degree and admission to the bar of at least one jurisdiction in the United States
  • At least five years of experience as a practicing attorney, with a focus on litigation, including trials
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in complex and non-complex negotiations, including throughout all phases of case handling
  • Direct client or stakeholder exposure, with the ability to work effectively with various stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research and analysis of legal issues
  • Strong understanding of business and firm metrics and analytics
  • Comprehensive understanding of defense and insurance litigation

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with managed law firm panels and outside counsel partnerships
  • Knowledge of legal project management principles and practices
  • Familiarity with legal technology and analytics tools
  • Certification in legal project management or a related field
