About the Role
The Data Engineer role at mercor is a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge AI coding agents and contribute to the development of innovative data engineering solutions. As a remote member of the team, you will be responsible for using frontier AI coding agents to complete and evaluate complex data engineering tasks. Your expertise in ETL pipelines, data warehouses, analytics platforms, and distributed data systems will be crucial in driving the success of mercor's clients.The role entails working closely with AI research labs to identify bugs, edge cases, scalability issues, and failure modes in model outputs. You will also compare outputs from multiple frontier models and assess their strengths and weaknesses, applying your professional engineering judgment to realistic data engineering scenarios.
What You Will Do
- Use frontier AI coding agents to complete and evaluate complex data engineering tasks
- Review model-generated implementations involving ETL pipelines, data warehouses, analytics platforms, and distributed data systems
- Identify bugs, edge cases, scalability issues, and failure modes in model outputs
- Compare outputs from multiple frontier models and assess their strengths and weaknesses
- Apply professional engineering judgment to realistic data engineering scenarios
- Evaluate model-generated data infrastructure and pipeline implementations
- Collaborate with AI research labs to drive innovation
- Develop and maintain large-scale data platforms
- Ensure data quality and integrity
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to the improvement of the codebase
What We Are Looking For
- 2+ years of professional data engineering experience
- Experience building ETL pipelines, data warehouses, analytics platforms, or distributed data systems
- Regular use of AI coding agents such as Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, or similar tools
- Ability to evaluate model-generated data infrastructure and pipeline implementations
- Strong understanding of data engineering principles and practices
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting
Nice to Have
- Experience operating large-scale data platforms
- Knowledge of machine learning and deep learning concepts
