About the Role
Data Scientists at OpenAI play a crucial role in building the analytical foundations that enable the company to deploy increasingly capable AI systems responsibly. As a Data Scientist, Safety, you will operate at the intersection of product, safety, policy, and research, solving complex and ambiguous problems where rigorous analysis informs critical decisions. The Safety team tackles some of the company's most important challenges, including understanding and preventing misuse and misalignment, intercepting fraud and abuse, and protecting vulnerable users.The role involves working on high-impact projects, often with minimal existing playbooks, requiring innovative solutions and a willingness to navigate uncertainty. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including Product, Engineering, Policy, Research, and Operations, is essential to drive safety outcomes. A strong understanding of statistical reasoning, analytical judgment, and experimentation is necessary to succeed in this position.
The Safety team's work has world-level impact, and as a Data Scientist, you will contribute to shaping how frontier AI systems are deployed safely. You will have unusual ownership and visibility, working on novel problems that require creative solutions.
What You Will Do
- Measure harmful or abusive behavior across OpenAI's products, developing metrics and analyses to inform safety decisions
- Detect fraud, manipulation, and coordinated misuse, designing and implementing detection systems
- Evaluate and improve safety classifiers, rules systems, mitigation systems, and human review workflows
- Design experiments and causal analyses to understand product, policy, and mitigation impacts
- Build prevalence estimators, dashboards, monitoring systems, and executive decision frameworks
- Diagnose gaps in safety and integrity systems using behavioral and product data
- Translate ambiguous safety risks into measurable problems and evidence-based recommendations
- Partner with Product, Engineering, Policy, Research, and Operations teams to improve safety outcomes
- Build zero-to-one analytical systems in rapidly evolving domains
- Develop and maintain large-scale data pipelines and architectures
What We Are Looking For
- Strong statistical reasoning and analytical judgment
- Experience with experimentation, causal inference, or observational analysis
- Strong SQL and Python skills
- Experience working with messy, incomplete, or noisy datasets
- Ability to structure open-ended business or risk problems
- Excellent communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- High ownership and comfort operating independently
- 3+ years of experience in a related field, such as data science, machine learning, or statistics
- Strong understanding of AI ethics and safety principles
- Experience working with large datasets and data visualization tools

- Knowledge of AI/ML model measurement and evaluation
