Job Description
## About the Role The Design Engineer role at Ramp represents the intersection of design and front-end engineering, where ambitious ideas are brought to life in real interfaces. The position involves prototyping directly in code, validating with customers, and shipping production experiences that meet a high bar for craft, performance, and reliability. As part of the design team, you will be working on building systems that directly shape how companies move and manage billions of dollars, making this role both challenging and impactful.
At Ramp, the approach to design is AI-first and builder-led, which means that work starts with clarifying intent and constraints using Large Language Models (LLMs), then moves into tools like Claude and Cursor to explore and build. This workflow is tested with real customers and finally refined in Figma for systems and polish. The use of AI and self-serve research as default parts of the workflow underscores the company's commitment to innovation and efficiency.
The team at Ramp consists of high-agency and high-urgency individuals who are builders at heart, owning problems end to end and making consequential decisions that shape outcomes. The company's median customer saves 5% and grows revenue 16% in their first year, demonstrating the significant impact of Ramp's solutions. If you're looking to build systems that directly influence how companies manage finances, Ramp is the place to achieve that.
## What You Will Do - Design and build high-craft product experiences, owning key surfaces end to end from concept through production.
- Use layout, interaction, and motion to make complex behavior feel simple and safe.
- Work AI-first with Cursor and Claude Code, using LLMs as your starting point to draft intent, explore implementations, scaffold components, and refactor with AI in the loop.
- Prototype in code and validate with customers, building interactive prototypes in React and TypeScript and testing them with real users using self-serve research tools.
- Bridge design systems, product, and brand, translating Ramp’s design principles into reusable components and patterns.
- Extend the design system to make expressive, brand-aligned moments easy to build and scale.
- Reveal what Ramp's agents are doing without noise, designing patterns that show what AI and automation are doing on behalf of customers.
- Champion performance and accessibility, shipping work that is fast, accessible, and robust, and paying attention to semantics, focus states, reduced motion, and Core Web Vitals.
- Share AI-native workflows, documenting prompts, patterns, and workflows used in Cursor and Claude Code and sharing them with designers and engineers to raise the bar across the team.
- Fluency in React, TypeScript or JavaScript, semantic HTML, and modern CSS.
- Active use of tools like Cursor and Claude Code, with clear opinions on how to get high-quality output.
- A portfolio that shows high visual and interaction craft in live experiences or working prototypes.
- A systems mindset and interest in building reusable components and patterns.
- Care for performance, accessibility, and reliability as part of craft.
- Clear written and verbal communication, and comfort pairing with designers, engineers, and marketers.
- Based in NYC or open to relocating to NYC.
- Knowledge of AI and machine learning principles and their application in design and development.
- Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems like Git.
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
- Generous PTO policy and flexible work hours.
- Remote work stipend and support for home office setup.
- Professional development opportunities, including conferences and workshop attendance.
- Access to the latest tools and technologies, including cutting-edge AI and design software.
