About the Role

The Developer Educator position at Planetscale is a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of database education. Day-to-day, the Developer Educator will focus on creating engaging and informative content, speaking at conferences, and hosting webinars. The role requires a deep understanding of database technologies, excellent communication skills, and the ability to adapt messaging for different audiences. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, enjoy learning about full-stack application development, databases, and compute infrastructure, and thrive in community settings.

What You Will Do

  • Create technical content, including blog posts, tutorials, and documentation, to help customers and the broader engineering community learn about Postgres, MySQL, Vitess, and the Planetscale ecosystem.
  • Represent Planetscale at conferences and events, speaking about database technologies and the company's vision for the future of data management.
  • Develop and refine product documentation to ensure it is accurate, up-to-date, and user-friendly.
  • Host livestreams and webinars to engage with and educate the community on best practices and new developments in database technology.
  • Travel (approximately 20-50% of the time) to connect with developers at events worldwide, promoting Planetscale and its mission.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to stay updated on the latest features and capabilities of the Planetscale platform.
  • Engage with the community through social media, forums, and other channels to provide support and gather feedback.
  • Develop strategic plans for educational content and community outreach, aligning with the company's overall goals and objectives.
  • Work closely with the marketing team to ensure alignment of educational content with marketing strategies.

What We Are Looking For

  • 2+ years of experience in engineering, solution architecture, technical education, or developer relations.
  • Strong understanding of relational databases (Postgres or MySQL).
  • Proven ability to create technical content, such as blog posts, tutorials, or documentation.
  • Experience speaking at conferences or hosting technical presentations and events.
  • Willingness to travel between 20-50% of the time.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts in an accessible way.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to manage multiple projects independently.
  • Enjoyment of experimenting with new ideas to further the education and marketing mission on Planetscale.
  • A natural ability to adapt messaging for different audiences and thrive in community settings.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Vitess or other distributed database technologies.
  • Knowledge of distributed systems and database scaling challenges.
  • Previous experience at a database or infrastructure company.
  • Familiarity with Excel for data analysis and presentation.
