Job Description

About the Role

The DevOps Engineer/SRE position at Fundraise Up is a unique opportunity to join a team that values thoughtful collaboration, strong engineering practices, and a product mindset. As part of a small team responsible for the stability, performance, and security of the server infrastructure, you will be working primarily with on-premise infrastructure, including bare metal and VMs. Your expertise will be crucial in driving clarity in ambiguous situations, defining requirements, and ensuring the smooth operation of the platform.

The team's philosophy is centered around end-to-end system ownership, where every engineer is expected to diagnose and fix issues in their area of responsibility. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with real infrastructure, beyond cloud abstractions, and is passionate about ensuring the platform remains stable, fast, and secure.

In this context, your role matters significantly as you will be contributing to the success of a platform that powers tens of millions of dollars in donations across the globe, supporting nonprofits like UNICEF and the Alzheimer’s Association. Your work will directly impact the efficiency and accessibility of fundraising efforts worldwide.

What You Will Do

  • Work primarily with on-premise infrastructure (bare metal and VMs) for setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Drive clarity in ambiguous situations by defining requirements, assumptions, and next steps.
  • Own automation projects end-to-end, from design to rollout and maintenance.
  • Improve operational hygiene and the way the team works, focusing on hardening and tuning systems.
  • Keep the platform stable, fast, and secure, including servers, web servers, databases, and queues.
  • Investigate production incidents across OS, networking, and infrastructure layers, applying temporary mitigations and coordinating with developers.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and use AI in day-to-day work for researching, troubleshooting, and developing.
  • Collaborate with the team to enhance the platform’s performance and security continuously.

What We Are Looking For

  • 4+ years of experience as a DevOps Engineer/SRE or in very close responsibilities.
  • Real, hands-on experience with servers (VMs, bare metal) at the OS level and below.
  • Confident Linux skills, specifically with Ubuntu.
  • Solid understanding of networking basics and the ability to configure and troubleshoot iptables.
  • Experience with Ansible, Git, Bash, or Python.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with automation and a strong understanding of infrastructure security.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Node.js, MongoDB, and other technologies used by the platform.
  • Knowledge of Webpack, Vue.js, and React, with nearly all code written in TypeScript.
  • Familiarity with Kafka for high-throughput messaging and Bull (Redis) for background processing.
  • Experience with ClickHouse for analytics data and Elasticsearch for search.

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive salary and stock options, reflecting the company’s commitment to its employees’ growth and success.
  • The opportunity to work with a talented team of professionals who value collaboration and mutual respect.
  • Flexible working hours, given the remote nature of the job, allowing for a better work-life balance.
  • Professional development opportunities, as the company fosters a culture of deep technical curiosity and knowledge sharing.
  • Access to cutting-edge technologies and tools, ensuring you stay up-to-date with industry trends.
  • A dynamic and supportive work environment that encourages innovation and creativity.

How to Stand Out

  • Highlight Real Infrastructure Experience: Since the role involves working with on-premise infrastructure, ensure your resume and cover letter emphasize any relevant experience you have with bare metal, VMs, and OS-level configurations.
  • Showcase Automation Skills: Given the emphasis on owning automation projects end-to-end, prepare examples of your experience with Ansible, Git, and other automation tools.
  • Prepare for Technical Depth: Be ready to dive deep into technical discussions about Linux, networking, and infrastructure security during your interviews.
  • Demonstrate Problem-Solving skills: Showcase your ability to drive clarity in ambiguous situations and your approach to troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues.
  • Research the Company Culture: Understanding Fundraise Up’s values and culture will not only show your interest in the role but also help you determine if you’re a good fit for the team.
