About the Role

The Director, Data Science position is a pivotal role within Liberty Mutual's Data Science Infrastructure organization, specifically within the Data Science Tools team. This team is dedicated to revolutionizing the way data science approaches the entire modeling pipeline, aiming to significantly enhance the productivity of the data science department. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, a proactive attitude, and a drive to help others by pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

The role involves working closely with various teams across Liberty Mutual to develop and implement modeling tools, pipelines, and applications that simplify the iteration, evaluation, and deployment of models. This is a unique opportunity to lead the development of strategies and roadmaps that will dramatically improve the processes of USRM Data Science expert teams.

What You Will Do

  • Design and implement modeling tools, pipelines, and applications to enhance the ease of iteration, evaluation, and deployment of models.
  • Develop and have ownership over strategies and roadmaps for improving data science processes.
  • Lead the building and maintenance of Python packages for use across the organization, including designing architecture, guiding coding agents, and reviewing code.
  • Implement AI Agents into tools using methods such as MCP, RAG, or other frameworks like PydanticAI and LangChain Deep Agents.
  • Utilize pipelining tools such as Luigi, Airflow, and Celery, and modeling packages like MLflow, H2O, Scikit-learn, Optuna, and LightGBM.
  • Follow and promote MLOps and AI Agent best practices across the organization.
  • Collaborate with groups like Enterprise Data & Data Science to keep up to date with state-of-the-art developments in data science open-source frameworks, MLOps, and agentic coding practices.
  • Shape the direction of the Tools team and foster a culture of ownership and shared growth.

What We Are Looking For

  • Broad knowledge of predictive analytic techniques and statistical diagnostics of models.
  • Advanced knowledge of predictive toolsets, with the ability to act as an expert resource for tool development.
  • Demonstrated ability to exchange knowledge and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Proven experience in a data science leadership role, preferably with a focus on tool development and process improvement.
  • Strong technical skills, including proficiency in Python, and experience with data science tools and frameworks.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate team members.
