About the Role

The Director I, Data Science position at Liberty Mutual is a unique opportunity for a talented and experienced data scientist to lead the development and implementation of cutting-edge data science solutions. This role is part of the Enterprise Data & Data Science team, where you will have the chance to work on projects that combine data science, AI, and enterprise data strategy. Your work will focus on identifying, evaluating, and developing innovative solutions, including the creation of GenAI evaluation frameworks and semantic data layers.

As a key member of the team, you will be expected to collaborate closely with other data scientists, machine learning engineers, data engineers, and business partners. Your expertise will be crucial in driving the adoption of best practices across a large and collaborative data science organization. The role requires a deep understanding of predictive analytic techniques, statistical diagnostics of models, and advanced knowledge of predictive toolsets.

What You Will Do

  • Design, build, and evaluate generative AI solutions and agentic systems to address complex business challenges
  • Develop and maintain data semantic layers and knowledge graphs to enhance enterprise-scale data accessibility
  • Build and implement evaluation frameworks and tools to assess the performance, reliability, and safety of GenAI systems
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate data science solutions into business operations
  • Lead cross-functional working groups to drive innovation in AI/ML methods and their applications
  • Communicate complex technical findings clearly and effectively to non-technical stakeholders
  • Serve as a technical consultant on complex, high-impact projects that require data science expertise
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders to ensure the alignment of data science solutions with business objectives
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in data science, AI, and ML, and apply this knowledge to continuously improve the team's capabilities

What We Are Looking For

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. or Master's) in a scientific field of study (Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Actuarial Science, etc.)
  • Minimum of 3 years (with a Ph.D.) or 6 years (with a Master's) of relevant experience in data science or a related field
  • Broad knowledge of predictive analytic techniques, statistical diagnostics of models, and predictive toolsets
  • Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely
  • Strong foundation in data science and machine learning, with proven MLOps expertise
  • Experience building GenAI solutions and agentic systems
  • Familiarity with GenAI evaluation methodologies and data semantic layers
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a large enterprise environment and lead cross-functional teams
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate technical information to non-technical stakeholders

Nice to Have

  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms and tools
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, R, or SQL
