About the Role

The Director of Engineering, Growth & Monetization plays a pivotal role at Gitlab, leading the engineering strategy and execution for the systems and product experiences that facilitate customer adoption, purchase, and expansion. This position focuses on the entire monetization journey, encompassing self-service experiences, quote-to-cash systems, billing, usage, budgeting, entitlements, and account management. The successful candidate will be instrumental in guiding Gitlab's evolution towards usage- and impact-based pricing by developing modular, scalable platforms that support seamless customer workflows and reliable business operations.

As part of this role, the Director will shape the technical direction for an API-first monetization platform, raising the bar for architecture, execution quality, and platform resilience. The first year will be crucial, with a focus on aligning engineering strategy across the monetization journey, strengthening core systems and integrations, and enabling the organization to support new pricing and packaging models with confidence. This leadership position reports into engineering leadership and plays a key role in connecting customer experience, platform architecture, and business outcomes.

What You Will Do

  • Lead the Growth and Monetization engineering organization, with accountability for strategy, architecture, execution, and team health.
  • Drive the technical vision for self-service purchase, expansion, billing, usage visibility, budgeting, and account management experiences.
  • Build end-to-end workflows across quoting, ordering, provisioning, billing, invoicing, entitlements, renewals, and expansion.
  • Design an API-first monetization platform that integrates with Salesforce and Adjust for enhanced customer management and analytics.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Design, Finance, Legal, Sales, and Enterprise Applications teams to deliver customer-centered, compliant, and resilient systems.
  • Guide multiple teams through managers, ensuring effective communication and alignment with company goals.
  • Develop and execute strategies for enhancing platform scalability, reliability, and security.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, encouraging the incorporation of AI and machine learning into monetization platforms for predictive pricing, usage forecasting, and more personalized billing experiences.
  • Align engineering efforts with business objectives, ensuring that technical solutions meet customer needs and drive business growth.

What We Are Looking For

  • Proven experience as a Director of Engineering or similar leadership role, preferably in a SaaS or technology company.
  • Deep understanding of software development life cycles, with expertise in designing and implementing scalable, secure, and efficient systems.
  • Experience with API-first development, microservices architecture, and cloud-based platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of Salesforce and Adjust, with the ability to integrate these tools into broader engineering strategies.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data sets and drive data-informed decisions.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies and version control systems such as Git.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with AI and machine learning technologies, particularly in the context of predictive pricing and personalized billing.
  • Knowledge of DevSecOps practices and tools, with a focus on security and compliance in software development.
  • Familiarity with containerization using Docker and orchestration using Kubernetes.
