About the Role

The Director of People Operations at Constructive Dialogue Institute (CDI) will play a pivotal role in shaping the organization's people practices, systems, and culture as it undergoes rapid growth. This position requires a seasoned HR professional with experience in supporting organizations through periods of significant expansion and increasing complexity. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in HR generalist principles and a proven track record of successfully scaling people systems while maintaining a collaborative, mission-driven culture.

CDI is dedicated to equipping the next generation of Americans with the skills to communicate and collaborate across lines of difference. Founded by psychologist Jonathan Haidt, the organization works closely with U.S. colleges and universities, providing co-curricular programming, professional development, and strategic guidance. The Director of People Operations will report directly to the VP of Operations and work closely with managers and leaders across the organization. This is a highly collaborative role that requires building strong relationships, supporting teams, and contributing to the organization's thoughtful growth.

What You Will Do

  • Develop and implement HR strategies that align with CDI's mission and goals, focusing on employee experience, organizational culture, manager effectiveness, and operational efficiency.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the organization to understand employee experience, organizational health, and team dynamics.
  • Lead initiatives to strengthen CDI's culture and employee experience, including onboarding, training, team gatherings, and org-wide rituals.
  • Manage and support the People Operations Generalist in talent acquisition and broader people operations processes.
  • Partner with the VP of Operations and other leaders on talent strategy, especially for complex or senior searches.
  • Coach managers on feedback, communication, accountability, and difficult conversations.
  • Oversee CDI's compensation framework, ensuring practices are equitable, competitive, and aligned with organizational values.
  • Develop and maintain HR policies, employee handbook materials, and internal practices that reflect CDI's values and operational needs.
  • Evaluate and manage HR vendors, benefits brokers, and external service providers.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and evolving HR best practices.
