About the Role
The Director of Product Finance, Compute & Infrastructure Demand is a critical role at Openai, responsible for driving strategic decision-making across the product organization. This person will serve as the primary finance partner to the AGI Deployment (Applications) Infrastructure Engineering organization, working closely with cross-functional teams to allocate resources, manage costs, and optimize product performance. The role is based in San Francisco and offers a hybrid work model, with three days in the office per week.As a key member of the Strategic Finance team, the Director of Product Finance will play a vital role in shaping the company's long-term strategy and growth. This will involve developing and refining financial frameworks, forecasting revenue and expenses, and analyzing market trends to inform business decisions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in finance, with experience in investment banking, consulting, or buy-side investing, as well as operational experience in a fast-paced, scaling company.
The Director of Product Finance will also lead a small team, providing mentorship and leadership while remaining hands-on with analysis and execution. This will require strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to distill complex financial data into actionable insights and effectively communicate with leadership.
What You Will Do
- Serve as the primary finance partner to the AGI Deployment (Applications) Infrastructure Engineering organization
- Own the consolidated compute demand forecast, partnering closely with capacity planning and supply teams to inform compute planning and allocation decisions
- Own forecasting for infrastructure spend across products, including infrastructure software and other key cost drivers
- Build and refine the financial framework that connects product usage, model behavior, inference settings, and infrastructure decisions to compute utilization, infrastructure costs, and product margins
- Develop clear insight into the tradeoffs between customer experience, growth, and profitability, including how latency, throughput, batching, model routing, and token usage affect margin performance
- Develop frameworks to evaluate ROI on compute and infrastructure spend across products, features, model settings, and user segments, and use those insights to inform investment and optimization decisions
- Create a durable cross-functional forum for compute economics, bringing together product, infrastructure, capacity planning, and finance to inform allocation, utilization, and margin tradeoffs
- Lead weekly margin reviews and monthly BvA analysis, and partner with Accounting and Corporate Finance to align internal metrics and reporting
- Prepare high-quality materials for executive and Board-level discussions
What We Are Looking For
- 12+ years of experience in investment banking, consulting, or buy-side investing coupled with operational experience at a fast-paced, scaling company
- Strong ability to critically evaluate opportunities and risks in financials
- Ability to distill complex financial data into actionable insights and effectively communicate with leadership
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to craft compelling narratives using data
- Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in financial reporting and analysis
- Familiarity with business models and metrics relevant to Openai
- Enthusiasm for technology and a passion for driving business growth through financial strategy
Nice to Have
- Experience with financial planning and analysis software, such as Anaplan or Adaptive Planning
- Knowledge of cloud computing and infrastructure costs, including AWS or Azure
- Familiarity with machine learning and AI concepts, including model development and deployment
- Certification in finance or accounting, such as CFA or CPA
