About the Role

The Director of Product Research and Development at Mercury Insurance is a senior leadership role that entails defining and driving the product strategy for the company's assigned line of business. This involves overseeing the research, development, and implementation of insurance products to achieve profitable growth and support the company's vision. The successful candidate will lead and manage a team of research and development professionals and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to continuously enhance products and pricing.

As a key member of the leadership team, the Director of Product R&D will play a crucial role in shaping the company's product strategy and driving business growth through innovative solutions. This role requires a unique blend of analytical, technical, and leadership skills, as well as the ability to communicate complex ideas and insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

The Director of Product R&D will report to senior management and will be responsible for leading and evolving a cross-functional process with actuaries, state product management, sales, underwriting, and other stakeholders to drive process improvement and product performance.

What You Will Do

  • Define and drive strategic plans for product development and execution in partnership with senior management
  • Direct and oversee data research and statistical analyses to solve complex business problems
  • Lead end-to-end product research, including initiating research, planning and coordinating resources, conducting research, leading implementation, and overseeing monitoring of product performance
  • Prioritize and govern the product development portfolio to ensure focus on the highest-impact initiatives
  • Evaluate and approve research plans and results, ensuring rigor, clarity of insights, and actionability
  • Oversee identification and resolution of product issues and direct implementation of recommended solutions and product enhancements
  • Direct and synthesize analyses of competitor pricing, product features, and service levels, and translate insights into product and pricing strategies
  • Establish and oversee product training strategies and ensure effective training delivery across the organization
  • Lead and develop team members, establishing training opportunities and overseeing talent development, performance management, compensation decisions, and staff planning
  • Build and advance R&D managers and analysts at various levels, ensuring strong succession and capability development

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in an analytical concentration such as math, statistics, economics, finance, or quantitative research
  • Minimum 8+ years of experience in product development or a related field
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in data analysis and statistical modeling
  • Excellent leadership and management skills, with experience in leading cross-functional teams
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to communicate complex ideas and insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience in the insurance industry, preferably in product research and development
  • Strong business acumen, with ability to drive business growth through innovative product solutions
  • Experience with Excel and other data analysis tools
