About the Role
The Engineering Manager, Cooperative Systems role at Openai is a unique opportunity to lead a team of talented engineers in building AI-powered automation systems that transform the workplace. As a key member of the Cooperative AI team, you will be responsible for developing and deploying scalable solutions that drive insights and impact across various domains. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include leading a small team, designing and building AI-powered automation systems, and staying hands-on in architecture and implementation.The Cooperative AI team is a highly multidisciplinary and self-contained team that partners closely with internal teams and external customers globally. You will operate in a hyper-fast feedback loop, deploying systems directly to internal users and gathering rapid feedback to evolve solutions in real-time. This role requires a deep understanding of applied AI, research, and product engineering, as well as the ability to work closely with customers and stakeholders.
The success of this role will be measured by the impact of the AI-powered automation systems on the organization, as well as the growth and development of the team. You will be expected to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in AI and automation, and to continuously evaluate and improve the systems and processes.
What You Will Do
- Lead and grow a small team of engineers building applied AI systems for internal operations
- Design and build AI-powered automation systems in close proximity to customers
- Stay hands-on in architecture and implementation across the full stack
- Develop evolving systems spanning developer tools, automation platforms, knowledge graphs, and data systems
- Deploy systems directly to internal users and close customers to iterate rapidly based on real-world feedback
- Engage frequently with scaled workforces to understand needs and validate solutions
- Create systems for visibility and learning in hybrid workforces
- Partner with product, research, and ops teams daily to drive insights and impact
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement new features and technologies
- Participate in code reviews and ensure high-quality code standards
What We Are Looking For
- 12+ years of experience in engineering, including 3+ years of experience in engineering management, and at least 7 years as an IC engineer
- Deep experience applying AI, and readiness to experiment with frontier approaches
- Strong technical judgment across systems design, infrastructure, and full-stack development
- Experience building developer tools, internal platforms, or workflow automation systems
- Enjoyment of frequent interaction with customers and thrival in feedback-driven development loops
- Comfort with ambiguity and excitement to operate in a rapidly evolving space
- Experience in operationally complex environments (e.g., logistics, support systems, internal tooling, warehouse automation, etc.)
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Ability to work in a remote and distributed team environment
