Job Description
About the Role
The Engineering Manager for Data Foundations at Gitlab will be responsible for managing and growing a high-performing engineering team. This team is part of the Data Foundations group and works on a core data platform that ingests, processes, persists, and queries data streams generated across Gitlab. The ideal candidate will have experience in distributed systems and be comfortable with architecture and technical guidance. As part of the Data Foundations organization, the team builds the engineering systems that make platform data reliable, scalable, and available to product teams across Gitlab. The Engineering Manager will partner closely with Product, Design, Infrastructure, Data, and other Engineering teams to evolve a platform that lives inside the product and runs across multiple deployment models.What You Will Do
- Hire, manage, and enable a high-performing Data Insights Platform engineering team
- Partner closely with product managers, product designers, and peer engineers to drive architecture and execution
- Help lead architecture and execution across both GitLab’s analytics platform and classic search capabilities
- Balance technical guidance with people management, including hiring, coaching, and developing engineers
- Drive non-linear productivity gains across the platform using AI
- Work on the architecture of high-throughput, multi-component data systems, including ingestion, buffering, enrichment, replication, storage, querying, and production operations
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver value to customers
- Help guide the work of building engineering systems that make platform data reliable, scalable, and available
- Develop and execute strategies for scaling the data platform
- Collaborate with the infrastructure team to ensure seamless deployment and operation of the data platform
What We Are Looking For
- Experience in managing high-performing engineering teams
- Deep knowledge of distributed systems and architecture
- Experience with data platforms, including ingestion, processing, and querying
- Familiarity with AI-driven solutions and their application in data platforms
- Strong technical leadership and communication skills
- Experience with collaboration tools such as Gitlab, Slack, and Zoom
- Strong understanding of data systems, including data storage, data processing, and data querying
- Experience with cloud-based infrastructure and deployment models
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Nice to Have
- Experience with specific technologies such as Adjust, Excel, and ClickHouse
- Familiarity with DevSecOps and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines
- Experience with machine learning and data science concepts
- Strong understanding of security and compliance principles
