About the Role
The Engineering Manager, Gitaly position at Gitlab is a critical role that focuses on building and supporting a high-performing team responsible for keeping the company's platforms secure, reliable, and scalable. As a leader in this team, you will be responsible for hiring, coaching, and developing team members to ensure they can deliver their best work while achieving strong results. You will partner closely with Product Managers and other Engineering leaders to translate business goals and customer needs into resilient infrastructure platforms that power all of Gitlab's offerings.The role requires a balance of hands-on technical leadership and people management, guiding architecture and design discussions, navigating complex tradeoffs, and ensuring that Gitlab operates with a strong focus on security, performance, and availability. As part of the Incident Management on-call rotation, you will collaborate with reliability engineers and development teams to meet availability goals and continually improve how the company responds to and learns from incidents.
What You Will Do
- Hire, lead, and support a high-performing Infrastructure Platforms team to create an environment where team members can do their best work and deliver strong results.
- Connect business goals and customer needs with sound engineering by partnering closely with Product Managers and other Engineering Managers to define and deliver scalable infrastructure platforms.
- Own agile delivery for your team, including planning, prioritization, and execution of projects that improve how Gitlab operates its platforms.
- Guide the security, reliability, performance, and scalability of core platform components, working with your team to design, review, and iterate on solutions.
- Collaborate across Infrastructure Platforms, other Infrastructure groups, Support, and Customer Success to ensure that Gitlab's platforms meet customer needs and are aligned with business objectives.
- Develop and implement strategies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the team, leveraging AI and other technologies to drive innovation and impact.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement, encouraging team members to expand their skills and knowledge to stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices.
- Represent the team and its work to external stakeholders, including customers, investors, and partners.
- Develop and manage budgets, forecasts, and resource allocation plans to ensure the team has the necessary resources to deliver its objectives.
What We Are Looking For
- Proven experience as an Engineering Manager or in a similar leadership role, preferably in a cloud-based or DevSecOps environment.
- Strong technical background, with expertise in areas such as cloud infrastructure, scalability, security, and performance.
- Experience with agile development methodologies and DevOps practices.
- Excellent leadership and people management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop high-performing teams.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
- Experience with AI and machine learning technologies, and a strong understanding of how these can be leveraged to drive efficiency and innovation.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
Nice to Have
- Experience working in a remote or distributed team environment.
- Familiarity with Gitlab's products and technologies.
- Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes.
- Knowledge of security and compliance frameworks, such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001.
- Experience with data analytics and visualization tools, such as Tableau or Power BI.
