Job Description

About the Role

The Engineering Manager, Merchant Experience, at Recharge is a pivotal role that oversees the development and improvement of merchant-facing features and tools. This includes leading two distinct squads: one focused on data analytics products and experiences, and the other centered on design systems and the merchant portal. The role requires a deep understanding of both technical and design aspects of product development, with the ability to prioritize features, ensure compliance with design patterns, and continually develop the skills of direct reports.

Given the cross-functional nature of this position, the Engineering Manager will work closely with product, design, and data teams to drive progress, build consensus, and maintain high standards of quality and stability. The ideal candidate is one who has previously shipped software and can leverage this experience to earn trust with the team and make informed decisions under pressure.

What You Will Do

  • Directly manage 6 engineers across two squads with distinct technical profiles, focusing on their growth and development.
  • Stay engaged in code reviews, technical decisions, and day-to-day engineering quality to ensure high standards.
  • Actively unblock engineers, both technically and organizationally, to maintain workflow efficiency.
  • Partner with product and stakeholders to align on goals and priorities while protecting team focus and quality.
  • Experiment with and establish AI tooling practices that can scale the team’s output.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and prioritize new features and improvements.
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of Recharge’s products and technologies.
  • Ensure compliance with design patterns and best practices across all products and features.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and provide constructive feedback to direct reports.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies to continuously improve the team’s capabilities.

What We Are Looking For

  • Prior experience shipping production software, preferably with recent experience as an independent contributor.
  • Comfort and proficiency in React or Python codebases, with preference for experience in both.
  • A strong technical background with the ability to read and understand code, not just tickets.
  • A bias towards action, with a low tolerance for unresolved ambiguity and the ability to make decisions.
  • Genuine curiosity about how LLMs and AI tooling are changing the way engineers work.
  • Experience in leading teams of engineers, with a focus on development and growth.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across multiple teams.
  • Experience with data analytics and design systems, or a willingness to learn.
  • A strong understanding of software development principles and practices.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with AI tooling and LLMs in a workflow context.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms such as GCP, including CloudSQL/MySQL.
  • Experience with Looker, Splunk, or Sentry.
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies.
  • A background in computer science or a related field.

Benefits and Perks

  • Competitive salary, aligned with country-specific practices and based on skills, qualifications, and experience.
  • Equity as part of the total compensation package.
  • Comprehensive health benefits.
  • Generous PTO policy to ensure work-life balance.
  • Remote stipend to support home office setup and productivity.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development within a rapidly expanding company.
  • Access to the latest tools and technologies to stay ahead in the field.

How to Stand Out

  • Develop a Strong Portfolio: Showcase your experience in managing engineering teams, especially in a remote context, highlighting successes in improving merchant experiences.
  • Highlight Technical Skills: Ensure your proficiency in React, Python, and other relevant technologies is clearly demonstrated in your application and during interviews.
  • Prepare for Technical Interviews: Review common engineering management interview questions and practice explaining technical concepts and your experience with code reviews and AI tooling.
  • Showcase Your Leadership: Provide specific examples of how you have motivated and developed team members, and how you handle challenging situations in a remote team environment.
  • Discuss AI Tooling Experience: If you have experience with LLMs or AI tooling, be prepared to discuss how you have integrated these into your workflow and the benefits you’ve seen.
  • Ask About Growth Opportunities: During the interview, inquire about opportunities for professional growth and how Recharge supports the development of its engineers and engineering managers.
  • Be Ready to Discuss Design Systems: Show your understanding of design systems and how they contribute to a seamless merchant experience, and be prepared to discuss how you would prioritize and implement design system improvements.
