Engineering Manager

About the Role

Day-to-day, the Engineering Manager will be responsible for setting clear technical and business direction, contributing to design and code, and fostering a strong, scalable, and reliable technical foundation. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity, is frustrated by hand-offs, and prefers to own the entire journey of a project. The Engineering Manager will scope solutions, build interfaces, and support production systems, working closely with customers to translate their needs into technical solutions.

There are no dedicated QA teams, designers, or product managers, which means the Engineering Manager will be a force multiplier, driving technical and business direction while championing the professional growth of every engineer.

What You Will Do

• Lead and manage a team of Software Engineers, providing technical guidance and mentorship to develop strong design, coding, and problem-solving skills.
• Design and implement end-to-end features, from user interfaces to scalable backend services, improving the performance and responsiveness of the core application.
• Collaborate with customers to translate their needs into technical solutions, building reliable data pipelines and integrations for product features.
• Design systems that support AI-driven automation features, scaling the engineering organization while maintaining high talent density.
• Partner closely with different functional teams to define and execute roadmaps that result in measurable business and customer outcomes.
• Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, developer experience, and delivery pipelines, collaborating cross-functionally with all leadership, Customer Success, and Operations.
• Guide critical architectural decisions focused on scalability, performance, and maintainability across core backend and infrastructure systems.
• Champion and drive high standards for code quality, testing, documentation, and overall engineering excellence.
• Contribute to technical designs and write or review code, particularly for complex or high-impact projects.

What We Are Looking For

• 4+ years of hands-on experience in software engineering, with a focus on full-stack product development.
• Strong technical leadership and people development skills, with the ability to foster a strong, scalable, and reliable technical foundation.
• Experience with Java, PostgreSQL, React, TypeScript, AWS, Docker, Terraform, GitHub, Linear, and Claude Code.
• A growth and learning mindset, with the ability to learn new technologies and adapt to changing requirements.
• Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to scope solutions, build interfaces, and support production systems.
• Experience with AI and NLP technologies, with a focus on applying these technologies to real-world problems.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with customers and cross-functional teams.

Nice to Have

• Experience with automated testing, CI/CD, and continuous integration.
• Knowledge of cloud-based infrastructure and scalable backend services.
• Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and lean software development principles.
• Experience with data pipelines and integrations, particularly in a government or public sector context.
