Job Description

About the Role

The Engineering Manager at Portless will be the driving force behind the company's day-to-day engineering operations. As a key member of the engineering team, this role will focus on execution, people management, and delivering elite metrics. The successful candidate will report directly to the VP of Engineering and will be responsible for managing a team of approximately 10 engineers across different time zones.

The role will require a high level of technical expertise, as well as excellent people management and communication skills. The Engineering Manager will be responsible for driving global engineering delivery, balancing planned and reactive work, and owning incident management and on-call processes. The ability to architect asynchronous workflows, own delivery metrics, and champion AI-augmented engineering will be essential in this role.

As the operational heartbeat of the engineering team, the Engineering Manager will be responsible for ensuring the team maintains high feature velocity while handling ad-hoc bugs and incidents. This will involve establishing clean frameworks, designing sustainable on-call rotations, and driving down Time to Restore Service (MTTR).

What You Will Do

  • Drive global engineering delivery and execute the technical roadmap defined by leadership
  • Balance planned and reactive work, ensuring the team maintains high feature velocity while handling ad-hoc bugs and incidents
  • Own incident management and on-call processes, designing sustainable on-call rotations and post-mortem cultures
  • Architect asynchronous workflows, minimizing the need for real-time meetings and ensuring high-quality documentation
  • Own delivery metrics, including Deployment Frequency, Lead Time for Changes, Change Failure Rate, and Time to Restore Service
  • Champion AI-augmented engineering, standardizing and optimizing the team's usage of modern AI development tools
  • Manage, mentor, and coach a team of approximately 10 engineers, conducting regular 1-on-1s and maintaining a motivated and inclusive culture
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and effective communication
  • Develop and implement processes to improve engineering efficiency and productivity
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies, applying this knowledge to continuously improve the engineering team's capabilities

What We Are Looking For

  • 2+ years of experience directly managing a team of software engineers, with a proven track record of successfully running globally distributed teams
  • Proven experience with AI development tools and a clear philosophy on how to lead a team utilizing them
  • Experience building triage systems for ad-hoc bugs and running real-time incident management for live production systems
  • Strong technical expertise, with a focus on Excel and experience with logistics and supply chain systems
  • Excellent people management and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and coach a distributed team
  • Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues and develop effective solutions
  • Experience with data analysis and metrics-driven decision making

Nice to Have

  • Experience with modern AI development tools, such as Cursor, Copilot, or Claude Code
  • Knowledge of cloud-based technologies and experience with cloud migration
  • Experience with DevOps practices and tools, such as Jenkins or Docker
  • Certification in engineering management or a related field
  • Experience with e-commerce platforms and logistics systems
