About the Role
The Engineering Manager position at Coinbase is a key role that entails leading a high-performing engineering team within the Simple Trade division. As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for guiding the development of features, services, and infrastructure that power Coinbase's retail trading experience. This includes building and leading a team of engineers who will work on cross-asset trading systems, unified account infrastructure, and regulatory integrations. The role requires a deep understanding of the technical aspects of trading systems and the ability to drive technical delivery.The Simple Trade team is part of the Consumer Product Group, which owns Coinbase's core retail trading experience. The team is at an exciting inflection point, expanding from crypto into equities, and the Engineering Manager will play a crucial role in shaping the technical roadmap for this expansion. The role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams, including Product, Design, and senior leadership, to ensure alignment between business goals and engineering priorities.
The Engineering Manager will be responsible for driving engineering excellence, making thoughtful architectural decisions, and fostering a culture of high-quality code. The role also requires a hands-on technical leader who can participate in design reviews, code reviews, and dive deep into the stack to unblock the team and maintain technical credibility.
What You Will Do
- Build and lead a high-performing engineering team that can develop features, services, and infrastructure for Coinbase's retail trading experience
- Own the technical roadmap for your team's area, driving execution on cross-asset trading systems, unified account infrastructure, and regulatory integrations
- Partner cross-functionally with Product, Design, and senior leadership to ensure alignment between business goals and engineering priorities
- Coach and develop your direct reports, supporting their career growth and enabling them to have a positive impact on the organization
- Drive engineering excellence by making thoughtful architectural decisions, fostering a culture of high-quality code, and ensuring your team meets engineering SLAs for reliability, performance, and operational health
- Be a hands-on technical leader when needed, participating in design reviews, code reviews, and diving deep into the stack to unblock your team and maintain technical credibility
- Set a high bar for talent and partner with Recruiting to hire exceptional engineers
- Drive clarity on the path forward in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment
- Ensure your team's work is aligned with Coinbase's mission and values
What We Are Looking For
- 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with significant experience building and operating distributed systems at web scale
- 2+ years of engineering management experience, with a track record of building, coaching, and retaining high-performing teams
- Experience with Excel and other productivity tools
- Strong understanding of the technical aspects of trading systems and the ability to drive technical delivery
- Experience with cross-asset trading systems, unified account infrastructure, and regulatory integrations
- Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide a team of engineers
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with cross-functional teams
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex problems and develop creative solutions
