About the Role

As a software engineer at Automattic, you will be part of a global team working on some of the most widely used open-source projects in the world, including WordPress and WooCommerce. Your day-to-day work will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and deploy new features and updates to these platforms. You will be working closely with other engineers, designers, and product managers to ensure that your work meets the high standards of quality and usability that Automattic is known for.

The role is fully remote, allowing you to work from anywhere in the world. As a member of the engineering team, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, from developing new features for WordPress to contributing to the growth of WooCommerce.

What You Will Do

Contribute to the development of WordPress, WooCommerce, and other Automattic products
Collaborate with designers, product managers, and other engineers to design and develop new features
Participate in code reviews and ensure that all code meets Automattic's high standards of quality and security
Work with the support team to resolve complex technical issues and improve the overall user experience
Develop and maintain automated tests for new and existing features
Contribute to the growth and development of the Automattic engineering team through mentorship and knowledge sharing
Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the tech industry and apply that knowledge to improve Automattic's products and services
Participate in the open-source community and contribute to other projects when possible
Collaborate with the AI team to develop and integrate AI-powered features into Automattic's products
Work with the DevOps team to ensure smooth deployment and operation of Automattic's products

What We Are Looking For

5+ years of experience as a software engineer, with a focus on web development and open-source technologies
Strong proficiency in programming languages such as PHP, JavaScript, and Python
Experience with modern web development frameworks and libraries, such as React and Node.js
Knowledge of database systems, including MySQL and MongoDB
Experience with version control systems, such as Git
Strong understanding of software development principles, including testing, continuous integration, and continuous deployment
Experience working with distributed teams and collaborating remotely
Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Passion for open-source technology and a desire to contribute to the growth and development of the open-source community

Nice to Have

Experience with AI-powered development and machine learning
Knowledge of e-commerce platforms, including WooCommerce and Shopify
Experience with cloud-based infrastructure, such as AWS or Google Cloud
Familiarity with containerization technologies, such as Docker
Experience with agile development methodologies and project management tools, such as Jira and Asana
