About the Role
The Expert Mainframe Systems Programmer position at Ensono is a pivotal role that involves supporting ongoing projects related to the installation, testing, and implementation of new z/OS operating systems and other system software. This includes the maintenance and debugging of systems software, research, and evaluation of new software and hardware products. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of z/OS components and detailed knowledge of support products such as tape management, scheduling, security, and monitoring systems.As a key member of the team, the successful candidate will provide thought leadership in terms of future direction for automation strategy, looking at best practices, tools, and processes in the context of Ensono's business, operations, and customers. This role requires a high level of technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work well under pressure, particularly during incident and problem resolution.
Given the nature of this position, it is essential to have a methodical and disciplined approach to work, excellent analytical skills, and problem-solving capabilities. The role involves participating in an on-call schedule and handling incidents, changes, and problems related to z/OS and tools.
What You Will Do
- Provide support for the installation, testing, and implementation of new z/OS operating systems and system software.
- Engage in the maintenance and debugging of systems software.
- Conduct research and evaluation of new software and hardware products.
- Assist team members and other areas with technical questions and problem resolution.
- Monitor and tune systems software for optimal performance.
- Participate in on-call schedules for incident and problem resolution.
- Configure and customize z/OS environments, including setup of parameters.
- Communicate with vendors for technical support and product information.
- Contribute to technical projects and provide leadership when necessary.
- Utilize advanced knowledge of TSO/ISPF, SDSF, JCL, and Unix System Services (USS) for system management and security.
- Apply knowledge of z/OS security, systems programming functions, and understanding of z/OS services structure.
What We Are Looking For
- A minimum of 15+ years of experience within a mainframe environment, preferably in a large enterprise setting.
- A Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
- Advanced knowledge of z/OS, including installation and maintenance, and SMP/E.
- Experience with Unix System Services (USS), including file system management and security.
- Ability to work well as a team member and lead when necessary.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Customer service skills at a management level.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work under pressure.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of DB2, CICS, or IMS is beneficial.
