Job Description
About the Role
The Family Law Advice Lawyer role is a temporary full-time position at the Queensland Government, offering a unique opportunity to provide legal advice and support to clients and prisoners. As a key member of the team, you will play a crucial role in providing legal information and advice on family law matters, including child protection, domestic and family violence, and related civil law areas.The role entails working closely with clients, prisoners, and other stakeholders to provide minor assistance, such as preparing letters and submissions. You will also be responsible for maintaining legal content in the legal information database, legal advice toolkit, and precedents.
The team context is dynamic, with a focus on providing high-quality legal advice and support. You will be working closely with other legal professionals, including lawyers and support staff, to ensure that clients receive the best possible service.
What You Will Do
- Provide legal advice and information to clients and prisoners on family law matters, including child protection, domestic and family violence, and related civil law areas
- Explain legal options to clients and refer them to other agencies when necessary
- Prepare letters and submissions to support client matters
- Maintain legal content in the legal information database, legal advice toolkit, and precedents
- Provide advice to Legal Aid Queensland staff on merit assessments for grants of aid
- Complete checklists and determine the likely success of each matter
- Recommend whether a client should receive aid for legal representation
- Liaise with key stakeholders in the justice system and Legal Aid Queensland about client matters
- Support Legal Aid Queensland's contributions to policy, procedure, law reform, and legal service delivery initiatives
- Participate in the development of team plans and work practices
What We Are Looking For
- Knowledge of the practice and procedure in family law and related civil law areas, such as domestic and family violence and child protection law
- Ability to provide legal information and advice in a clear, concise, and articulate manner
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to tailor your communication style to your audience, including clients with complex needs
- Experience working with trauma-informed practice principles
- Knowledge of the practice and procedure of the relevant areas of law and ethical standards
- Ability to work in a team environment and build strong relationships with stakeholders
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks effectively

- Experience working in a legal aid organization or similar environment
- Knowledge of digital skills and remote work practices
