About the Role
The Forensic Structural Engineer position at Salas O'Brien involves investigating and evaluating the cause and extent of structural damage resulting from various incidents such as storms, natural disasters, fires, explosions, construction defects, accidents, and foundation movement. This role is critical in providing clear, well-supported conclusions and high-quality technical reports to clients. As part of a remote/home office setup, the successful candidate will work independently while leveraging internal experts and resources, building long-term relationships with colleagues, clients, and partners.Day-to-day responsibilities will include conducting site inspections, analyzing failure modes, and developing clear, well-supported conclusions. The ability to provide timely, professional updates to clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders is essential, as is the capacity to work collaboratively with a cross-functional team of experts.
What You Will Do
- Conduct site inspections to determine the cause, origin, and extent of structural damage
- Evaluate failure modes and contributing factors to structural issues
- Develop clear, well-supported conclusions and produce high-quality technical reports
- Provide timely, professional updates to clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders
- Work independently from a home office while leveraging internal experts and resources
- Build long-term relationships with colleagues, clients, and partners
- Drive issues to resolution with internal and external stakeholders
- Ensure deliverables meet or exceed customer expectations and applicable standards
- Contribute ideas that strengthen processes, tools, and customer outcomes
- Help others navigate change and adopt improvements
What We Are Looking For
- 2+ years of forensic engineering experience, with 5-10 years preferred
- Strong technical writing skills to produce effective reports
- Excellent verbal communication skills for face-to-face interactions
- Ability to provide the utmost in customer service to clients
- Technical proficiency with computers, phones, cameras, etc.
- Experience working independently and with cross-functional teams of experts
- Licensure as a professional engineer
- Ability to work legally in the U.S. without sponsorship or restrictions
- Expert Witness experience is preferred but not required
Nice to Have
- Experience with Excel for data analysis and reporting
- Knowledge of structural analysis software
- Certification in a related field, such as structural engineering
- Experience in project management or team leadership
