About the Role
The Forward Deployed Engineering team at Openai plays a critical role in turning research breakthroughs into production systems. As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you will be at the forefront of this effort, leading complex end-to-end deployments of frontier models in production alongside the company's most strategic customers. Your work will have a direct impact on the success of these deployments and the advancement of AI technology.The role involves working closely with customer engineering and domain teams to understand their needs and guide the adoption of the solutions you build. You will be part of a hybrid work model, spending 3 days in the office per week in Paris, with up to 50% travel required. Openai offers relocation assistance to support your move.
What You Will Do
- Own technical delivery across multiple deployments from the first prototype to stable production.
- Build full-stack systems that deliver customer value and sharpen how the company learns from its products.
- Embed closely with customer teams to understand their needs and guide the adoption of what you build.
- Scope work, sequence delivery, and remove blockers early to ensure smooth project progression.
- Make trade-offs between scope, speed, and quality, adjusting plans as necessary to protect delivery timelines.
- Contribute directly to the code when progress or clarity depends on it, using skills in Python, JavaScript, or comparable stacks.
- Codify working patterns into tools, playbooks, or building blocks that others can use, enhancing the team's efficiency and knowledge base.
- Share field feedback that helps Research and Product teams understand where the models succeed and where they can improve, driving continuous improvement.
- Keep teams moving through clarity and follow-through, ensuring that projects stay on track and that stakeholders are informed.
What We Are Looking For
- 5+ years of engineering or technical deployment experience, including customer-facing work, with a strong understanding of GTM and Adjust.
- Experience scoping and delivering complex systems in fast-moving or ambiguous environments.
- Ability to write and review production-grade code across frontend and backend using Python, JavaScript, or comparable stacks.
- Experience building or deploying systems powered by LLMs or generative models, with an understanding of how model behavior affects product experience.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to simplify complexity and make fast, sound decisions under pressure.
- Ability to spot risks early and adjust without slowing down, modeling calm and judgment when stakes are high.
- Experience working in a hybrid or fully remote setup, with the ability to manage time effectively and stay connected with the team.
Nice to Have
- Experience with AI or machine learning deployment.
- Knowledge of cloud platforms and containerization.
- Certification in Agile methodologies or similar.
