About the Role

The Forward Deployed Engineer position at Openai represents a unique opportunity for engineers to work at the forefront of AI research and deployment. As a key member of the Forward Deployed Engineering team, you will partner with customers to transform research breakthroughs into production systems. This role operates at the intersection of customer delivery and core platform development, requiring a deep understanding of both technical and business aspects.

Day-to-day, you will lead complex end-to-end deployments of frontier models in production alongside Openai's most strategic customers. Your primary focus will be on discovery, technical scoping, system design, build, and production rollout, working directly with customer engineering and domain teams. Success in this role is measured through production adoption, measurable workflow impact, and eval-driven feedback that informs product and model roadmaps.

You will work closely with various teams, including Product, Research, Partnerships, GRC, Security, and GTM, to ensure seamless collaboration and effective problem-solving. This role is based in Singapore, with a hybrid work model that includes 3 days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is available for new employees, and 50% travel is expected.

What You Will Do

  • Own technical delivery across multiple deployments from the first prototype to stable production.
  • Build full-stack systems that deliver customer value and sharpen how we learn from these deployments.
  • Embed closely with customer teams to understand their needs and guide the adoption of what you build.
  • Scope work, sequence delivery, and remove blockers early to ensure smooth project progression.
  • Make trade-offs between scope, speed, and quality, adjusting plans as necessary to protect delivery timelines.
  • Contribute directly to the code when progress or clarity depends on it, demonstrating a hands-on approach to problem-solving.
  • Codify working patterns into tools, playbooks, or building blocks that others can use, promoting knowledge sharing and efficiency.
  • Share field feedback that helps Research and Product understand where the models succeed and where they can improve, driving continuous improvement.
  • Keep teams moving through clarity and follow-through, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed and aligned.

What We Are Looking For

  • 5+ years of engineering or technical deployment experience that includes customer-facing work, demonstrating an ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience scoping and delivering complex systems in fast-moving or ambiguous environments, showing adaptability and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in writing and reviewing production-grade code across frontend and backend using Python, JavaScript, or comparable stacks, with a focus on quality and scalability.
  • Experience building or deploying systems powered by LLMs or generative models, with an understanding of how model behavior affects product experience.
  • Ability to simplify complexity and make fast, sound decisions under pressure, prioritizing delivery and customer satisfaction.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with engineers, product teams, and customer stakeholders, ensuring effective collaboration.
  • Ability to spot risks early and adjust without slowing down, demonstrating a proactive approach to risk management.
  • Calm and judgment under pressure, with the ability to model these behaviors for the team.
