About the Role
The Forward Deployed Engineer position at Openai is a critical role that involves partnering with customers to turn research breakthroughs into production systems. This is achieved by operating at the intersection of customer delivery and core platform development. As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you will be part of a team that values collaboration, innovation, and the safe deployment of AI systems.Day-to-day, you will lead complex end-to-end deployments of frontier models in production alongside Openai's most strategic customers. This entails owning the discovery, technical scoping, system design, build, and production rollout of these deployments. Your success will be measured through the adoption of these models in production, the measurable impact on customer workflows, and the feedback that drives changes in product and model roadmaps.
You will work closely with various teams including Product, Research, Partnerships, GRC, Security, and GTM. This role is based in Stockholm and follows a hybrid work model with 3 days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is offered, and travel up to 50% may be required.
What You Will Do
- Own technical delivery across multiple deployments from the first prototype to stable production.
- Build full-stack systems that deliver customer value and enhance the learning process.
- Embed closely with customer teams to understand their needs and guide the adoption of the systems you build.
- Scope work, sequence delivery, and remove blockers early to ensure smooth project progression.
- Make trade-offs between scope, speed, and quality, adjusting plans as necessary to protect delivery.
- Contribute directly to the code when progress or clarity depends on it.
- Codify working patterns into tools, playbooks, or building blocks that others can use.
- Share field feedback that helps Research and Product teams understand the successes and areas for improvement of the models.
- Keep teams moving through clarity and follow-through, ensuring projects stay on track.
What We Are Looking For
- 5+ years of engineering or technical deployment experience, including customer-facing work.
- Experience in scoping and delivering complex systems in fast-moving or ambiguous environments.
- Ability to write and review production-grade code across frontend and backend using Python, JavaScript, or comparable stacks.
- Experience in building or deploying systems powered by LLMs or generative models, with an understanding of how model behavior affects product experience.
- Ability to simplify complexity and make fast, sound decisions under pressure.
- Excellent communication skills to work effectively with engineers, product teams, and customer stakeholders.
- Ability to spot risks early and adjust without slowing down.
- Modeling calm and judgment when stakes are high.
