Job Description

About the Role

The Freelance Designer position at PowerLines is a unique opportunity to join a nonprofit organization that is rapidly becoming a leader in shaping the national discussion around energy utility regulation. As a key member of the design team, you will be responsible for creating compelling graphics and materials that support PowerLines' mission and public engagement efforts. Your work will have a direct impact on the organization's ability to communicate complex policy issues to a wide audience.

The role is part-time, with a target range of 20-30 hours per week, and is expected to last for 3-6 months. However, the contract may be extended depending on the organization's needs. You will work closely with the policy and communications teams to develop a deep understanding of the issues and create visuals that are both informative and engaging.

PowerLines is an early-stage nonprofit organization, and as such, it is still developing its design and brand identity. You will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the organization's visual voice and help establish best practices for design and communication.

What You Will Do

  • Design and produce a variety of materials, including multi-page reports, event materials, data visualizations, social media graphics, and web graphics
  • Collaborate with the policy and communications teams to translate complex policy into clear and engaging materials
  • Support the existing PowerLines brand identity and help establish a consistent visual voice
  • Develop and refine the internal design workflow and organizational best practices
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining quality and consistent communication
  • Create templates for documents, PowerPoint presentations, and social graphics
  • Design long-form documents and publication layouts
  • Develop data visualizations and complex graphics
  • Collaborate with designers and non-designers to ensure a cohesive visual identity
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions to develop new ideas and concepts

What We Are Looking For

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design or a related field, with at least 3 years of relevant professional experience
  • Strong portfolio showcasing work in print and digital design
  • Highly proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop
  • Experience designing long-form documents or publication layouts
  • Experience creating data visualizations and complex graphics
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and project management skills
  • Ability to adapt to evolving priorities and shifting deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work well with designers and non-designers alike
  • Strong problem-solving and ideation skills

Nice to Have

  • Experience with video editing, web design, or working with nonprofit, policy, or mission-driven organizations
  • Knowledge of design trends and best practices in the nonprofit sector
  • Experience with design systems and creating consistent visual identities
