About the Role
The Fullstack Applied AI Engineer role at MAIA is a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI solutions that transform the way industrial companies operate. As a key member of the engineering team, you will be responsible for building and evolving MAIA's core product capabilities, with a primary focus on backend and AI systems. This includes designing, implementing, and shipping features from discovery to production rollout, with a strong emphasis on quality, latency, and cost.The role involves collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, including Product, DevOps, and customer-facing teams, to turn requirements into high-quality, maintainable software. You will be working on complex problems, such as integrating with real engineering workflows, understanding complex technical documents, and turning implicit organizational knowledge into actionable insights.
MAIA's engineering team is comprised of talented individuals with a passion for AI, SaaS, and industrial tech. As a Fullstack Applied AI Engineer, you will be expected to take ownership of your work, experiment with new technologies, and push the boundaries of what is possible.
What You Will Do
- Build and evolve MAIA's core product capabilities, with a primary focus on backend and AI systems
- Design, implement, and ship features from discovery to production rollout, with a strong emphasis on quality, latency, and cost
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Product, DevOps, and customer-facing teams, to turn requirements into high-quality, maintainable software
- Develop and maintain RAG pipelines, retrieval strategies, and LLM integrations, making pragmatic tradeoffs across quality, latency, and cost
- Implement frontend changes needed to ship features end-to-end, with a focus on simple, intuitive UI work
- Build evaluation approaches for LLM features, including quality gates, regression detection, and observability
- Proactively scout new technologies and approaches, translating findings into production-ready solutions
- Push the team's understanding of what is possible with AI and industrial tech
- Participate in code reviews, ensuring high-quality, maintainable code
- Collaborate with the DevOps team to ensure seamless deployment and operation of MAIA's products
What We Are Looking For
- Strong backend engineering skills in TypeScript, or another strongly typed language (Go, Java, Rust)
- Proven experience building and shipping production REST APIs
- Strong SQL skills, ideally with PostgreSQL in production
- Hands-on experience building or operating LLM applications, ideally with exposure to RAG systems and retrieval concepts
- Commercial experience with at least one relevant LLM framework and at least one vector database
- Practical experience debugging production systems using observability tooling (logs, metrics, tracing)
- Solid React fundamentals and the ability to implement and maintain frontend components with good engineering quality and basic UX judgment
- Foundational understanding of cloud and DevOps concepts, enough to collaborate effectively with a dedicated DevOps engineer
- Ability to follow secure development best practices in day-to-day engineering work
- Fluent in English, with German being a plus
Nice to Have
- Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems (e.g., Git)
- Knowledge of containerization (e.g., Docker) and orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes)
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure)
