About the Role
The General Counsel role at UpGuard is a unique opportunity to lead the in-house legal function and play a critical role in the company's continued growth and success. As a strategic legal advisor to the executive leadership team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing legal strategies that support the company's goals. You will inherit a small but capable legal team and work closely with them to manage the day-to-day commercial legal operations.The General Counsel will serve as a key member of the executive team, providing guidance on legal matters and ensuring that the company is complying with all relevant laws and regulations. This is a hands-on role that requires a deep understanding of the business and the ability to navigate complex legal issues.

What You Will Do
- Develop and implement legal strategies that support the company's goals and objectives
- Provide strategic legal advice to the executive leadership team on a wide range of matters, including corporate governance, compliance, and regulatory issues
- Lead and manage the in-house legal team, including recruiting, training, and developing team members
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations
- Manage outside counsel and vendors, including negotiating contracts and managing budgets
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including sales, marketing, and product development, to ensure that legal considerations are integrated into business decisions
- Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including investors, customers, and partners
- Stay up-to-date on developments in the law and regulations that affect the company's business
- Manage the company's intellectual property portfolio, including trademarks, copyrights, and patents
- Provide guidance on employment law matters, including hiring, termination, and employee relations
What We Are Looking For
- 8+ years of experience as a lawyer, with a focus on corporate law, intellectual property, and compliance
- Experience working in a fast-paced, rapidly growing company, preferably in the technology or cybersecurity industry
- Strong understanding of corporate governance, compliance, and regulatory issues
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with executives, employees, and external partners
- Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to lead and develop a team of lawyers
- Experience with intellectual property law, including trademarks, copyrights, and patents
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and creatively
- Ability to work in a remote environment and manage a distributed team
Nice to Have
- Experience working with AI-driven technologies and cybersecurity solutions
- Familiarity with data privacy laws and regulations, including GDPR and CCPA
- Experience with anti-bribery and anti-corruption laws and regulations
- Familiarity with employment law in multiple jurisdictions
