Job Description
About the Role
The General Counsel's Office at Direct Counsel is seeking a highly skilled Associate to support the firm's new business intake process. This critical role involves managing and analyzing conflicts of interest, ensuring compliance with professional responsibility obligations, and providing guidance to attorneys and staff. As a key member of the team, you will work closely with various departments to ensure consistent and compliant intake practices.Day-to-day, you will be responsible for conducting thorough conflicts of interest analyses, drafting and reviewing conflict waivers, and implementing ethical walls as necessary. Your expertise in legal ethics and compliance will be invaluable in advising the team on professional responsibility obligations and conflicts rules. You will also participate in training and guiding colleagues on intake policies and procedures.
What You Will Do
- Manage and support the firm's new business intake process for prospective clients and matters
- Conduct conflicts of interest analyses using internal and external databases
- Draft, review, and implement conflict waivers and ethical walls where necessary
- Advise attorneys and staff on professional responsibility obligations and conflicts rules
- Provide guidance and training on conflicts and intake policies and procedures
- Participate in an after-hours, weekend, and holiday on-call rotation for urgent conflicts issues
- Collaborate across departments to ensure consistent and compliant intake practices
- Handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and sound judgment
- Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the firm's intake processes and procedures
- Identify areas for improvement and propose solutions to enhance the intake process
What We Are Looking For
- 3+ years of experience in conflicts management, legal ethics, professional responsibility, or a related compliance function
- Strong understanding of professional responsibility obligations and conflicts rules
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience with internal and external databases for conflicts analysis
- Familiarity with conflict waiver and ethical wall implementation
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
- Strong organizational and time management skills
Nice to Have
